Meet Matt Davis of the Dwyer baseball team

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — #Whynotus could be used to describe a number of things. It could be used in business to help motivate a sales team. It could be used as a rallying cry by that scrappy underdog fanbase that has made a miracle run through the postseason.

It can also be used by players on a team, like Matt Davis and the Dwyer baseball team did this past season.

“Originally it was a joke that we had been making,” Davis said when explaining the origin of the team motto. “As our team continued to win and prove that we were one of the best teams around, we decided to go by that motto and have some confidence in our playing skills.”

While Davis and the rest of his team had a successful year on the field, making it to the Regional Final, one could argue his off-the-field resume is even more impressive.

As a junior, Matt is in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and carries a 5.1 GPA. In addition to his rigorous academic schedule and being on the baseball team, Davis also gives back to the community, doing volunteer work for the Miracle League, Special Olympics, and Little Smiles.

“I enjoy the Miracle League the best because I get to interact and help buddies play the sport I love,” Matt said. “It’s fun and rewarding to see how much they enjoy playing.”

When Matt isn’t on the diamond, in the classroom, or volunteering, he lives the typical high schooler life, hanging out with friends and playing video games. He also enjoys playing pickleball with his family, including his 13-year-old sister Danielle.

“She is my biggest fan,” Davis said.

While Matt’s off-the-field bonafides speak for themselves, he has had plenty of success on the field too. Growing up and living in the same town where a lot of current and former MLB players spend their offseason has allowed him to learn some valuable lessons about what it takes to continue playing baseball past the high school level.

I am able to meet and see MLB/college baseball players at the gym where I work out,” Matt said. “It’s very interesting to watch them and see the work ethic that is needed to be successful in the future.”

That knowledge and hard work have already started to pay off. While only a junior, Matt has already committed to playing college ball at Florida State University, which could lead to a true “House Divided” situation considering the rest of his family’s allegiance.

“They are all UF Gators, I’ll be the first Seminole.”
