Homestead boys golf team swings their way to state competition

MEQUON, Wis. — Homestead High School is known for many things, including strong academics, robust extracurricular activities, and competitive athletics. Over the past few months, Head Coach Steve O’Brien (a/k/a “O’B”) and his varsity boys golf team helped to bolster the school’s reputation for competitive athletics teams by delivering impressive results:

  • North Shore Conference Champions
  • All five players awarded first or second team All-Conference honors and All State Academic honors
  • Conference Player of the Year (Senior, Joe Fricker)
  • Sectional Champions
  • State Championship qualifiers for the 22nd time during O’B’s 27 years as Head Coach
  • 7th place finish at the State Championship

The season’s highlights are too many to count here, including some individual rounds below par and first place finishes at almost all meets in which the team competed.

The most exciting moment came when the boys – having advanced out of the Regional Championships one week earlier – won the state’s most challenging Sectional. Homestead edged out Kettle Moraine (who would go on to finish second at the State Championship) by one stroke. The victory was fueled by all around clutch play from the team, making key shots when it mattered most (featuring an eagle from Junior Hunter Thibert on the 18th hole), to ensure a trip back to State. Despite not bringing home the title, it was a season to remember!
