Q&A with new Hutto football head coach William Compton
HUTTO, Texas. — This fall, Coach William Compton will bring his 19 years of coaching experience to Hutto High School. He has his BS from Angelo State and his Masters in Education from Lamar University. For the last three years he has served as the Offensive Coordinator for Buda Johnson High School in Hays Consolidated Independent School District. But after admiring Hippo Nation from afar, he is elated to now be serving as our new head coach. We recently had a chance to sit down and chat with Coach Compton, and here is what we learned:
How did you get involved with coaching football?
William Compton: My father was a coach, and I always admired the impact he had on the students and the community, and from very early on, I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I was in Junior High School when I made that decision, and I have never really looked back.
What was it about Hutto that made it an appealing option for you?
Compton: There were several things that were appealing to me. First, the program has a great reputation and tradition, and I loved the idea of being associated with it and building on it. Second, Hutto is one high school town (at least for the time being), and that means the whole community is invested in the success of the program. Finally, this community loves its football, and I know that will mean a lot to the kids. They really feed off that enthusiasm. It makes for a great coaching environment.
Now that you have had a little time to assess the athletes and the program, what’s your first impression?
Compton: Well, the community as a whole has been really welcoming to me and my family. We already feel very much at home. And the players have been great. I have been especially impressed by their work ethic. They like the challenge, and they want to be pushed.
How would you describe your coaching philosophy?
Compton: As an offensive coordinator, I am an offensively minded coach, and with Coach Mullins as our new defensive coordinator (alongside our other talented coaching staff), I think we are going to win a lot of games; regularly competing for the district title and making a run at state as well. But, in terms of philosophy, I think it all begins with relationships – and that includes all the kids – not just the star players. It begins with the simple things like learning their names, understanding their strengths and weakness, and even what’s happening in their lives off-the-field.
How about your own kids, will they be involved with the program?
Compton: I have two sons, and they are both quite athletic. My oldest Tristan, will be a junior and he is excited to be part of the program, and my second, Levi, is in 8th grade, and very much looking forward to being a part of Hippo Nation.
Have you already created your theme/focus for the year?
Compton: Yes, I call it F4.
Family – we treat and support each other like family
Faith – we believe in ourselves and each other
Fight – we will compete in everything and fight for what we want to achieve
Finish – we give our best all the way to the end
Hippo nation is delighted to have Coach Compton leading the charge, and we wish him every success in the weeks and years ahead. Welcome to Hutto Coach Compton!
