4-star RB Jeremiah Cobb brings explosiveness, speed to Auburn

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BVM) – Jeremiah Cobb isn’t particularly outspoken. In fact, he’s rather reserved for one of the most sought-after running backs in the country.

The Montgomery Catholic rising senior prefers to let his game do most of the talking, and it speaks volumes.

“Jeremiah doesn’t really talk much trash; he’s not one of those guys who are really vocal,” Montgomery Catholic head coach Kirk Johnson said. “Last year in the playoffs, one of the teams went on social media and kind of got all of his social media information: his sister, his mom and all this stuff. They kind of said that he wouldn’t make it out of the first quarter.

“He had one of the best games of his season. He ran the ball real hard, was very physical and at the end of the game, he just posted a picture and kind of said ‘I made it out of the first quarter.’ It was good to see his personality open up because he’s not that type of guy. Watching him play that game with a chip on his shoulder was good to see.”

The extra motivation Cobb was given ahead of the 3A semifinals resulted in a dominant performance.

The four-star running back ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries as the Knights dominated Hillcrest in the second half to win 41-6. While impressive, Cobb’s performance that night was anything but a surprise.

It was his 11th game of the season with at least 120 rushing yards and multiple rushing touchdowns. Cobb finished his junior season with 2,163 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns after running for 2,013 yards and 18 touchdowns as a sophomore.

Cobb’s immense talent and explosiveness are best exemplified by a two-week period in the middle of his junior campaign. He rushed for an eye-popping 311 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Montgomery Academy. The next week, while being held to just 68 yards on four carries, he made his presence felt through the air by catching three passes, all for touchdowns, for 116 yards.

“He’s got elite speed and he’s not big on juking or anything like that; he’s a one cut and get vertical type of guy,” Johnson said of Cobb. “That makes him very dangerous.”

Not only do those elite skills make Cobb dangerous, but they also make him highly coveted.

A top 15 player in Alabama for the Class of 2023, according to On3.com, Cobb collected offers from the likes of Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Oregon and others before narrowing his top three down to Auburn, Clemson and Tennessee. But on July 1, he elected to stay within the state and commit to the Tigers.

“Ultimately, it boiled down to the fact that he felt at home,” Johnson said of Cobb’s decision. “He felt like it wasn’t anything different than what he’s been in, so having a 45-minute drive and having familiar faces made him feel better.

“Auburn’s getting a complete kid. I’m not one to continue to talk about all the field accolades because at the end of day, I don’t want him to be defined by just being a football player. There’s plenty of great football players out there who do nothing for the world. He’s a young man who’ll be at the Boys and Girls Club, he’ll help tutor a kid that needs help; he’s that type of young man.”

Johnson said he’s looking forward to seeing how Auburn utilizes Cobb’s versatile skill set, but not before one final run with Montgomery Catholic. After advancing to the 3A semifinals in back-to-back seasons, Johnson and the Knights have the loftiest of goals for the fall.

“We’re going to try our best to put a great product out there and that’s what we plan on doing,” Johnson said. “We’re blessed that we have guys like Jeremiah Cobb and not only him because he’s not the only one. We have another senior in LJ Green who’s a phenomenal football player, Caleb McCreary our junior quarterback and tons of other weapons.

“We plan on putting a product out on the field to where anything short of a state championship is a disappointment.”
