Meet Southern Methodist University golfer, Dallas native Sophie Biediger

DALLAS — As the crow flies, it might be more like 1.5 miles, but by car, the distance from Highland Park High School to the Fincher Building on the campus of Southern Methodist University is 2.3 miles. Without traffic, it will take even the slowest driver less than 10 minutes to make the trip…a little bit longer if you are on a bicycle. That’s how far about 75-100 HPHS graduates per year will go to SMU to attend college. One of the more notable Scots, and now Mustang, is Sophie Biediger. Sophie is in the top 6% (18th) of her graduating class and could have gone to UT-Austin, TCU, or University of Georgia but instead decided to stay local and attend college at SMU where she will also be a member of the women’s golf team. “I didn’t expect to stay in Dallas, but I have the right fit. I chose SMU because of the pretty campus and the opportunities for internships and networking. Seems like everyone that graduates has a great job lined up,” says Sophie.

Sophie started playing golf at the age of 3 or 4 she thinks. Her parents, Jerry and Amy, would take her to Dallas Athletic Club on weekends to hit balls, and she loved it. Could it be a genetic thing? Her dad is a good club player at Royal Oaks, her uncle is a PGA pro in California, and her aunt was on the LPGA Tour and won the British Open. Pretty good pedigree if you ask me. In previous issues of The Good Life Park Cities, we debated who was/is the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) to graduate from HPHS. Will we be able to add Sophie Biediger to the list? Only time will tell, but if past is prologue, we may be watching greatness develop.

Her accomplishments to date include the 2022 USGA Women’s Four Ball qualifier, winner of college preview Legends Junior Tour event, and she tied for first at George Hannon Invitational. Sophie is the winner of two NTPGA tournaments and tied for second at Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational. She had five high school victories and all finishes within top six during her senior season and was first place in 2022 District and Regional tournaments. As if that was not enough, she also finished third place at Texas 5A State Championship and was First Team All-District and First Team All-Region in 2022. She’s not sure if she wants to go pro. “If I went pro, it would be because I was winning everything in college and have a really good chance of making it as a pro…we’ll see,” said Miss Biediger. SMU has produced a couple of US Open champions in Bryson Dechambeau and Payne Stewart. Will Sophie Biediger be the next SMU alumni to win a US Open?  With confidence and humility, Sophie told me that if golf doesn’t work out she’ll likely study finance at the Cox School of Business. She has a plan.

Her family, and especially her dad, watch her play in tournaments. “I am super grateful for all the support I’ve gotten over the years. Everybody has believed in me,” says Sophie. “I think the Park Cities, Dallas area, and SMU are full of great opportunities, and I am so excited to be able to stay in the area and fulfill everything that I can imagine.” If you want to watch Sophie play with the Mustang squad, her home matches will be at Trinity Meadows Golf Club. Good luck Sophie…we’re hoping to see you holding up a trophy on the Golf Channel someday soon.
