Piedra Vista introduces new head volleyball coach Rebekah Eaves

FARMINGTON, N.M. — Sports encourage us to constantly practice and push ourselves to be better and improve on our skills. With drive and determination, one can overcome any obstacle set before them. The sport of volleyball is no exception.

Rebekah Eaves is a longtime volleyball player who recently accepted the position as head volleyball coach at Piedra Vista High School. Rebekah’s passion and career for volleyball began back in 2010. The first organization Rebekah played with was the Four Corners Volleyball Club in Durango, CO. Afterwards, her skill and passion for the sport grew.

Throughout all four years of high school, Rebekah played on the varsity team at her home high school, Piedra Vista. She thrived off of continually pushing herself and enjoyed the camaraderie with her coach and teammates. With her passion and commitment, Rebekah landed a scholarship through her efforts.

Rebekah attended Arizona Western, a junior college in Yuma, Arizona. Gaining even more experience, she then transferred to William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Rebekah went on to play volleyball for another three years for her university. After graduating, Rebekah was hired on as the head volleyball coach.

Since starting in mid-May, Rebekah already has key points she is trying to teach to her team. “I want to focus on team orientation and defense,” explains Rebekah. Volleyball is a sport played by a team. Rebekah shares that communication is key in a game. Rebekah shares that “the team will focus on building relationships to make for a great season.”

Currently, Rebekah has not yet coached a game. However, she is extremely enthusiastic for what the future holds for both her career and team. “I am excited to have those memorable moments with these girls,” states Rebekah. As far as teaching style goes, Rebekah likes to focus on the positives, even when times of uncertainty arise. “It is important to not discourage them and to move on and focus on the next game. We can focus on what was done right and how we can transition our play to the next game,” shares Rebekah.

The upcoming season for volleyball is looking bright. It is also right around the corner.  Rebekah states she is “proud of the work and effort the girls are putting into the program.” So be prepared to support Coach Eaves and her amazing volleyball team when they take to the court.
