Previewing Dothan area football programs ahead of the fall season

DOTHAN, Ala. — We are only a couple of weeks from the kick-off of high school football! Let’s preview the football teams, in addition to Dothan High, that call Dothan Home. Those include Northside Methodist, Providence Christian, and Houston Academy. All three are classified as 3A and all are in region 2.

Northside’s coach is Toby Greene. He is in his 28th year of coaching and second year with Northside. Greene said last season had growing pains and is excited about having a lot of players back this year. One challenge is to replace linemen which Greene says can be hard to do. About five players will be playing both ways. The starting quarterback will be Harrison Hicks. Greene said, “Harrison had a good spring and has a lot of natural ability.” Jadyn Watkins and Braylen Clements both return at running back. Returning at receiver is Tyler Quintero and Colin Blackwell. At lineman David Peters, Gauge Graves, and Matthew Robertson return. Greene said, “Our schedule will be tough. Being in a 9 teams region makes is a little harder. We have a good chance to have a good season though and we are genuinely excited.”

Entering his 4th season as head coach at Providence, Kenny Keith is excited about his team. “We have so many coming back with playing time and experience and they  know what to expect. We will play a lot of the 14 seniors, but also have 16 juniors and most of them got to play last year.” Keith said that upcoming senior, Harrison Mims, is the leader of their team. “He plays multiple positions including linebacker, fullback and quarterback.” He will continue to enjoy his favorite part of coaching which he says is “the kids and the relationships with them and the other coaches. The journey is more important than the results.”

Houston Academy lost 13 to graduation, but they have 13 rising seniors with eight returning starters on both sides of the football. Coach Eddie Brundidge said, “We have a good nucleus of kids coming back that have experience playing which is so important because you can’t simulate actual playing time in practice.” Offensively the Raiders are returning players that had a big role last year including running back Jeb Daughtry who rushed for over 1,000 yards and Will Wells  who gained over 900 receiving yards. Returning quarterback, Kadyn Mitchell, is expected to start again. Defensively Brundidge is depending on returning starters Ethan Coachman, Logan Boothe, John Cole, J.T. Eberhart, Rod Young, Keenan Beaver, and Brady Whigham.
