Q&A with Richmond Hill runner Reese Wilson
RICHMOND HILL, Ga. — A Q&A with Reese Wilson who is a runner that has competed with Richmond High School and plans to continue with Kennesaw State.
When did you first develop an interest in running? What motivated you to want to do it competitively?
Reese Wilson: “I first was involved in running my freshman year of high school. It was more of a conditioning sport to get me ready for soccer and I wasn’t very serious about it. Eventually I realized that I wasn’t half bad at it and eventually got more involved. Nothing really took off until I moved my sophomore year to RH where I met Coach Sybert. He knew I was new and got me involved in the sport real quick. I made friends and I was progressively getting faster. That’s where it all really started.”
Who influenced you the most throughout your high school career?
Wilson: “I would say my 2 main influences were Coach Sybert and Kayla Gholar. I remember as a little sophomore seeing Kayla do so well in all her races and winning state! I knew that I wanted to run at her level, but knew I wasn’t physically gifted like she was. Coach showed me that even if I didn’t have natural talent it could be earned through hard work. That’s what I’ve been doing my whole running career is just pushing myself as hard as I can in order to get where I want to be.”
What have been some of your favorite sports memories over the years in school?
Wilson: “Sophomore year was great. I had great friends and I really grew socially in school and it really helped me adjust from moving to Richmond Hill from Texas. Junior track season was by far my favorite season. Every race was a good race and I placed at state in the 3200m, even though in the beginning we were just hoping I’d break 12. State my junior year was really fun. A small group of kids went, but they were the kids that were there at practice that were working to get to state. The time spent with my friends there and the reward of placing in the 3200m and the 4×8 with my favorite girls was just the best thing ever.”
What are your future plans after high school? (Both academically and athletically)
Wilson: “My plans after high school are to go to Kennesaw State. I got both academic and athletic scholarships to go there and I’m in love with their team. My degree is still unclear, still deciding on 2 main degrees for which one I will take as my career path. But, I’m very excited to run in college. It’s going to be a great experience and is a great opportunity to make memories!”
