Top 10 Seton Hall basketball players of the last decade
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (BVM) – Seton Hall made one of the bigger splash hirings following the NCAA season bringing in March Madness’ recent Cinderella success story, and Pirates alum, Shaheen Holloway. With an alumni becoming coach it’s got many thinking back to some of the best Seton Hall alumnus in recent memory.
Here’s a look back at some of the top Pirates from the past decade:
10. Quincy McKnight

McKnight started his career as a member of the Sacred Heart Pioneers. After two seasons with Pioneers, he entered the transfer portal and became a member of the Pirates. In his two seasons with the Pirates, 2018 and 2019, McKnight brought in a key energy that helped boost the team’s defensive unit. He had 1.6 steals in 2018 and 1.5 steals in 2019. In the same season, his shot took a massive step in the right direction, averaging 35 percent from the 3-point arc and 85 percent from the free throw line. He was selected in the G-League draft by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
9. Angel Delgado

Delgado was a reliable presence in the paint for Seton Hall from 2014 to 2017. In his freshman season in 2014 he averaged 9.8 rebounds, showcasing an efficient effort in the paint where he posted a field goal percentage of 54, throughout his four-year career. During his senior season in the tournament against Kansas, Delgado dominated with 24 points and 23 rebounds. Despite going undrafted he was given a chance with the Clippers in the 2018-2019 NBA season. He played two games, clocking in a total of just seven and a half minutes per game.
8. Jared Rhoden

Rhoden is the most recent Pirate alumni to crack the list, playing for the team from 2018 to 2021. The 6-foot-6 guard was the leading scorer on the 2021 squad that made the tournament, averaging 15.5 points per game. He was also one of the best rebounding guards in college, getting seven rebounds per game in 2021. These feats earned him a spot on the All-Big East first-team. Although he went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings gave him an offer.
7. Sterling Gibbs

Gibbs played just two of his four seasons with the Pirates, but became an impactful player in his short stint. The 6-foot-2 point guard played his freshman year with Texas and after sitting out for a season due to transfer rules, he began his Seton Hall career in 2013 and 2014. His 44 percent clip from long range was crucial for the Pirates during the up-and-down 2014 season. Following his run at Seton Hall, Gibbs transferred to UConn for his final season, making way for his current run in the Czech Republic.
6. Fuquan Edwin

Edwin was a reliable scorer for the Pirates during the early 2010s and although only two of his seasons were a part of this decade, those two seasons were enough to get him on the list. His best season was his junior campaign in 2012, where he averaged 16.5 points per game and shot 41 percent from the 3-point line. After playing in the G-League from 2014-2018, Edwin became a youth basketball instructor in Atlanta.
5. Khadeen Carrington

Carrington was a reliable scorer for the Pirates from 2014 to 2017 and helped lead the team to multiple NCAA tournament berths. In his junior season in 2016, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 17 points per game and shot 38 percent from three. He had a legendary performance in the tournament his senior year, with 26 points against North Carolina State in the first round and 28 points against Kansas in the second round. That season earned him a spot on the All-Big East second team. He went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft, and has played overseas since.
4. Desi Rodriguez

Rodriguez played forward for the Pirates from 2014 to 2017 and showcased an ability to improve every year on the court. In his freshman season he averaged 5.6 points, but improved that to 17.5 points by his senior season. The then senior was a part of the Pirates successful run to the tournament, enjoying a 20 point effort in the team’s first round matchup against NC State. He currently plays in France.
3. Sandro Mamukelashvili

Mamukelashvili was a stretch big man for the Pirates from 2017 to 2020. In his junior season he shot 43 percent from three and showed massive improvement in his free throw shooting, going from 60 percent as a freshman to 71 percent as a senior. As a senior he was one of the two Big East Players of the Year. Unfortunately, his production didn’t lead to team success, as the Pirates missed the tournament for the first time since the 2015 tournament. Following his collegiate career, he was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the second round before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. In the 2021-2022 NBA season he played 41 games and showed great potential in the NBA Summer League, making it on the All-Summer League first team.
2. Isaiah Whitehead

Whitehead only played two seasons for the Pirates, but those two seasons were great. As a freshman in 2014 he averaged 12 points per game, before making a significant jump in his sophomore season to 18 points per game. Whitehead won the Most Outstanding Player for the Big East Tournament in 2016. He was selected by the Jazz in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he’d play the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 NBA seasons. He was traded away from the guard heavy Nets in 2018, and currently plays in Turkey.
1. Myles Powell

Powell is the only Pirate player to score 20 points per game for the Pirates in the last 10 seasons. He actually did it twice, with 23 points per game in 2018 and 21 points per game in 2019. In his senior season he won the Jerry West award for best college shooting guard, along with Big East Player of the Year. Unfortunately, he was unable to play in the tournament his senior season due to Covid. The Pirates were having their best season in recent memory, in part due to the offensive production of Powell. After going undrafted, he played for the New York Knicks in the G-League in 2020-2021, before making his NBA debut for the Philadelphia Sixers in 2021-2022.
