Nicolet HS boys volleyball team returning experience and welcoming new talent

GLENDALE, Wis. — The Nicolet High School boys’ volleyball team will be a fun team to watch this fall. Nicolet has one of longest tenured boys’ volleyball programs in the state. Coach, Brad Kuehl, has been the coach since 2003. He is proud of the team’s success over the years with five conference championships and four sectional championships. The team has finished as the state runner-up twice in back-to-back years. Currently, Coach Kuehl, shares that the team is in a rebuilding phase, and he is excited for some returning talent and new talent joining the team this year.

Coach Kuehl shares that this year’s team is a young team. Last year in their playoff game five freshmen players stepped on the court. They have four very talented incoming freshmen joining the team this year. It will be a year of a lot of learning with a lot of talent. Coach Kuehl is looking forward to helping the teammates work together and be successful. There is a lot of range of experience between returning senior players and incoming freshman players. Coach Kuehl enjoys working with athletes of various levels and creating a strong team bond. He says the team’s goal is simple – to constantly be improving and learning to win. Coach Kuehl emphasizes the importance of preparing the team for situations that come up in a game that are not familiar – to learn to anticipate the unexpected and how to react. The team will work hard on their volleyball skills, and they will also grow together as a team by discussing non-volleyball events. Coach Kuehl shares that when major current events take place the team discusses them and what they can learn from them. For game time, Coach Kuehl emphasizes to the team the importance of always being aggressive, attacking and playing with no fear. He tells the team, “Everything you do you should put your all into it, so you do not have any regrets later.”

Like many sports volleyball has become a year-round sport. The team this year will have four incoming freshmen who played club volleyball. Coach Kuehl notes that the players who play year-round are noticed and their skills increase because of increased playing time. He encourages young athletes that want to play volleyball to get out there and play for their middle school team, and or for a club. He also shares that even if you have not played volleyball before and you want to play at Nicolet, show up for the first day. Coach Kuehl can teach you how to be a volleyball player. He has taken kids who have never touched a volleyball until the first day of tryouts and they have graduated as all-conference varsity volleyball players. Volleyball is an exciting game to play and watch. He encourages the community to come watch the team. Go Knights!
