Previewing upcoming football seasons for Coronado, Frenship, and Lubbock Cooper
LUBBOCK, Texas —
CORONADO MUSTANGS: Coach DJ Mann and his squad at Coronado will be focused and ready for the new season with their DPS program (which stands for District champs, Practicing on Thanksgiving, and State champs). With soon-to-be Red Raider and star linebacker John Curry, QB Jett Carroll (who threw for 3,200 yards last year) and cornerback Cam Manahan (6 pick six’s last year) all raring to go, the Mustangs are looking forward to the challenges ahead, realize they are playing a lot of good teams and just want to come out and represent.

FRENSHIP TIGERS: District 26A continues to strengthen each and every year, and Coach Northcutt at Frenship knows that his team’s focus has to be really sharp when it comes to discipline, culture, and chemistry. With so many key seniors moving on to the next level last year he will be counting on some up-and-comers out of Summer Tiger Camp to step up and fill some big shoes. Along with established team leaders 6’4” 290 lb. Center Isaiah Kema and 6’6” Wide Receiver Tate Beels (who averaged 3 TD’s per game last year), QB Hudson Hutcheson will most likely be stepping up from JV to lead the Varsity Tiger squad this season. Coach Northcutt gave us a summer camp update, stating, “The Tigers are wrapping up a great summer of preparation for the 2022 season! A couple of players to keep an eye on are returning senior LBs Kobe Ayers and Ethan Curbo as well as defensive ends, Caden Spano and Caydin Blakey. In addition, returning Jr. WRs Landon Hutcheson and Brooks Roberson are expected to help round out a very talented receiving core. Exciting things ahead for the Frenship Tigers!”

LUBBOCK COOPER PIRATES: As Coach Darden and the Lubbock Cooper Pirates bump up in classification from 5AD2 to 5AD1 this year, they know the competition will be tough. New coaches including David Lakeman (defensive coordinator) and Taylor Read (special teams coordinator) will be assisting coach Darden in their ’22-’23 campaign. With larger schools now on their schedule, they will be stepping up in size and competition in regards to their opponents. Long-time rivalry games with Coronado and Monterey have now become district games for the Tigers this season, and will most likely now have a huge impact on their playoff hopes. In addition, the Tigers will host Abilene High and Amarillo Tascosa. However, in LCP land expectations never change. With a nice mix of younger guys now stepping up alongside returning leaders including standout Defensive Lineman Ty Politte, Lineman Colter Lynch and Linebacker Cutter Douglas (an exceptional football player who can play any position on the field on both sides), LCP’s high expectations will continue. They will be looking to build better and go even further than they did in last season’s very successful 13-2 campaign, doing everything they can to once again be right in the mix. Coach Darden gave us a summer update stating, ” We’ve had a good summer and the guys are ready for the season to start. In district we host Coronado, Abilene High and Amarillo Tascosa. Those are 3 of the best teams in the state.”
