Buena High School football program continues to create an atmosphere of winning
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — The Buena High School football program concluded its summer workouts during the final week of July with a weeklong host of activities that focused on team bonding. With the school year beginning on August 3rd, this year brings a new Athletic Director (AD) that shares Buena’s community values and maintains Buena’s legacy of creating champions both on the field and in the classrooms. Colvin Cole is that person. With a new AD and a head football coach that just completed his master’s degree, this team continues to create an atmosphere of winning. Even though experiencing a 2021-2022 3 win/7 lost season, Coach Thomas feels that he has the tools and team talent to take this team to the State Finals.
Head coach Joe Thomas took more than 70 new and returning football players through rigorous off-season practices and drills to enhance their skills in order to evaluate the capability of each player and put the best talent on the field at the opening of the 2022-23 season.
With many new additions, new and improved weight room, new uniforms, and new score boards to name a few, the Colts will be a force to be reckoned with especially with returning skills players and impressive freshman core that might be called to play at the varsity level.
Coach Thomas is entering his 8th season as the head coach and has 24 wins and 21 losses in the past years and one playoff appearance in 2019-2020.
Coach Thomas states that his endeavor is not only to teach the young players about football but to teach them about life. During practices and workouts, you will hear Coach Thomas talk about perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. His sincere love for the kids shows as he treats everyone like his own child. He continually states that he is proud of the hard work that they put in day after day.
Mandatory practices begin August 8th at Buena High, and the Colts kick off the fall season Aug. 25th with a scrimmage versus Rio Rico and Rincon.
Our first game is the 2022-23 season will be at Sahuarita High School on September 2nd, 2022.
