Better Chelsea star: Roy Kent or Christian Pulisic?
HERNDON, Va. (BVM) – Volkswagen has rolled out a commercial to promote its new 2022 electric SUV starring American soccer player Christian Pulisic. The ad spot quickly goes through the young star’s life focusing on the pressure around being a soccer prodigy. The 60-second commercial even features cameos from other footballers Clint Dempsey and Roy Kent.

Dempsey is real and was the best player on the USMNT before Pulisic came around. Kent, on the other hand, is the fictional soccer player turned Premier League coach on Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.” Kent is played by Brett Goldstein and won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series after his portrayal of Kent in Season 1 of “Ted Lasso.”
The similarities between Dempsey and Pulisic are obvious; both are American, both played in the Premier League and both at one point held the mantle as the best American soccer player. However, Kent wasn’t just thrown in the commercial because he is a popular fictional character on a popular comedy show.
There are some similarities between Kent and Pulisic. For starters both have ties to Chelsea FC. Kent was a center midfielder and Pulisic is currently a winger for Chelsea. According to the show, Kent played Stamford Bridge eight years before the time viewers saw him in Lasso. While playing for Chelsea, he helped them win the UEFA Champions League. Kent became a fan favorite, so much so that even when his skills began to wane at the end of his career on AFC Richmond, fans still would yell out Kent’s chant.
“He’s here! He’s there! He’s every-f—ing-where! Roy Kent! Roy Kent!”
Pulisic has played for Chelsea since 2019 after being transferred from German club Borussia Dortmund.
In that time, he has become a star for Chelsea just like Kent was. Pulisic also played a huge role in the club hoisting the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2021. He became the first American to play and win the UEFA Champions League Final, as well as the youngest Chelsea player and first American to score in the semi-finals.

Along with their shared time at Stamford Bridge, they’re also around the same height as Kent is 5-foot-11 and Pulisic is 5-foot-10. They both play in the midfield, but different positions in the midfield. However, they certainly don’t have the same demeanor.
But, it is safe to say that after Kent’s impressive showing in Season 2 as a coach, he would have a good shot of being on the coaching staff for England when they head to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. That means he would be facing off against Pulisic when the US Men’s National Team and England play each other in pool play on November 25.
