Dominick Lofino Park holds grand opening for new pickleball courts

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio — Tuesday, July 26 at 11 am marked the eagerly awaited grand opening ceremony for the new pickleball courts at Dominick Lofino Park, 640 Grange Hall Road. Made possible thanks to donations spearheaded by the group Picklepals, several tennis courts were converted to dual purpose courts for both tennis and pickleball. The courts are first come, first serve with designated pickleball times from 7 am to 10 am and 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Pickleball is played on a 22′ x 44′ court with two players, in singles, or four players, in doubles. Players use solid paddles to hit a perforated hollow ball, much like a wiffle ball, over a net. The ball is served diagonally, underhand, with the paddle below waist level and must be hit in the air on the serve. There is a seven foot no-volley zone on either side of the net, sometimes called “the kitchen”, to prevent players spiking the ball and the ball must clear the no-volley zone and land in the diagonal court each time it is served. Players must allow the ball to bounce once before volleys are allowed.

The serving side will continue to serve until there is a fault by his/her team at which point service will be given to the opposing side. A fault occurs when the ball touches the no-volley zone on the serve, is hit out of bounds, does not clear the net, is volleyed from the no-volley zone or is volleyed before a bounce has occurred.

Points can only be scored by the side that serves. The game is played to 11 points, however a team must win by 2 points.
Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three fathers from Bainbridge Island, Washington. They used items they had around the home to make the equipment and borrowed rules from the games of tennis, badminton, and table tennis to create a new game their children and families could enjoy. Over the years pickleball has become one of the fastest growing sports in America and can be picked up fairly quickly by almost anyone. This fun and accessible sport has even developed rules for those who use a wheelchair. If you are hoping to see pickleball in the Olympics, you might be waiting a bit longer. While pickleball is growing in international popularity, for now it is still largely a U.S. game.
