Get to know New Bremen volleyball player Abi Powers
NEW BREMEN, Ohio — There’s no denying the success of the New Bremen volleyball team. They’ve filled bleachers and secured numerous titles in recent years. This featured athlete is a dedicated member of the volleyball program and we’re so excited to tell you more about her.
A New Bremen High School senior, Abi Powers has been playing competitive volleyball since the 5th grade. Her passion and talent for the sport have landed her the varsity libero position for her junior and senior years.
Abi has had much success in volleyball and has secured numerous awards including First Team M.A.C., First Team District 8, and Third Team All Ohio Division 4. She loves the competitive energy of volleyball, and the unifying effect it can have on a team.
“Nothing matches the feeling you get when your team makes this amazing play altogether. Or the celebration after knowing that the hard work and dedication you have put in, shows the most in that moment,” she says.
Many great memories have been made throughout Abi’s volleyball career, but one of her favorites is the regular season game against New Knoxville this past year. She has difficulty recalling the details of that game but cherishes the moment after the last point was scored. She remembers hugging her family and feeling how proud they were of her.
Like many sports, volleyball proves to have its challenges. Abi says that embracing the process has been difficult throughout her training. Early morning practices and all-day tournaments can get exhausting and instill quite the challenge for athletes. However, Abi claims that constant encouragement from her coach has kept her motivated.
“No matter what you need to embrace where you are in the moment until you get to where you want to be, then you can embrace that,” Abi recalls her coach’s advice to the team.
Learning to be a member of a team is important in any sport, but the concept takes on an entirely new definition when it comes to volleyball.
“Without being able to depend on my teammates, we would not be successful. They have shown me that I can depend on them to help me just as much as they can depend on me to help them,” Abi says when discussing what being a member of the has taught her.
Outside of volleyball, Abi enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys drawing and painting.
“I have always had this connection to art. Art is a unique way of expressing how you feel,” she says.
Her biggest piece of advice to young volleyball players is to find joy in the game. Abi knows the importance of internal motivation and encourages this to come from a place of genuine enjoyment for the sport. As Abi heads into her final season as a New Bremen volleyball player, she hopes to embrace every moment. She is focused on staying grounded in the present and seeing where the journey takes her.
