Top 10 Texas QBs for 2022 HS football season

AUSTIN, Texas (BVM) – It’d be a tough task to find high school football better than the product that exists in the Lone Star State. With three teams in the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25, there will be plenty of high-end talent taking the field this fall in the state of Texas.

Perhaps no position is more important than quarterback on the gridiron and Texas has no shortage of elite signal-callers. From five-star seniors committed to Power 5 programs to Class of 2024 QBs flying under the radar, here are the top 10 Texas high school quarterbacks heading into the 2022 UIL football season.

10. Trey Owens, Jr., Cy-Fair

Owens is one of those 2024 QBs who is somewhat flying under the radar after a breakout sophomore season. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound junior threw for more than 1,700 yards and 18 touchdowns last fall after leading Cy-Fair to the Texas 7-on-7 State Championships consolation game in June 2021. Owens’ long arms and ideal height for the position have given a handful of Division I programs enough reason to extend an offer. With two high school seasons left to play and plenty of room to improve, the uncommitted Owens currently holds offers from Baylor, Houston, Texas Tech, Washington State and others.

9. Bo Edmundson, Sr., Lake Travis

Edmundson is the first committed prospect and first QB from the Class of 2023 to appear on this list. The three-star Michigan State commit completed 62% of his passes for 3,239 yards and 38 touchdowns to just nine interceptions last season. The impressive junior campaign helped the Cavaliers (12-3) to a Texas 6A D-1 state semifinal appearance and earned him 26-6A first-team all-district honors. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Edmundson chose the Spartans over Colorado, Kentucky, Penn State, Purdue and others.

8. Jacobe Robinson, Sr., Henderson

Despite Henderson’s (4-6) team struggles last season, Robinson proved to be a bright spot and one of the best QBs in the state. The pro-style quarterback completed 62% of his passes for 2,123 yards and 22 touchdowns to just two interceptions while adding another 280 yards and two scores on the ground. Robinson committed to Boston College in February and will look to bring the Lions some improved success this fall as a senior.

7. Jake Strong, Sr., Northwest

A true dual-threat quarterback, Strong was just as deadly with his arm as he was with his legs last season. The three-star QB racked up 3,252 yards of total offense (2,334 passing, 918 rushing) and 37 total touchdowns (29 passing, eight rushing) en route to Texas District 3-5A-I Overall MVP honors in 2021 after being named the district’s Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore. Strong will remain in-state at the next level after committing to Texas Tech in January over Boise State, Cincinnati, Indiana, Memphis and others.

6. Cole Welliver, Jr., Marcus

Welliver will take over the reins of a Marcus program that has won back-to-back district titles after backing up Jaxxon Warren last season. The four-star QB threw for 687 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore in limited action and will have plenty of opportunities this fall to prove why he’s ranked as one of the nation’s top-20 signal-callers in the Class of 2024. Despite limited varsity action, Welliver has received offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Washington State and others. Expect that list to balloon after a highly-anticipated junior campaign.

5. Mabrey Mettauer, Jr., The Woodlands

Mettauer put the state of Texas on notice in his first season as a starter last fall. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound QB completed 66% of his passes for 2,461 yards and 25 touchdowns while adding another 444 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. The spectacular sophomore campaign earned him Texas District 13-6A MVP honors and a handful of Power 5 offers. Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Miami, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and others have already offered the four-star QB and another strong season could propel him into stardom.

4. Michael Hawkins, Jr., Allen

Much like Mettauer, Hawkins put himself on the map of elite Texas high school quarterbacks last fall in his first season as a starter. The four-star QB completed 65% of his passes while accounting for 3,537 yards of total offense (2,807 passing, 730 rushing) and 29 total touchdowns (21 passing, eight rushing) as a sophomore which earned him Texas District 5-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Hawkins has had a busy summer with Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M extending offers but the 6-foot-1 signal-caller remains uncommitted.

3. Austin Novosad, Sr., Dripping Springs

Novosad became one of the most sought-after QBs in the country after a spectacular junior season in which he threw for 3,339 yards and 40 touchdowns, earning Texas District 12-5A-1 Overall MVP honors in the process. The four-star signal-caller was also named an Elite 11 finalist this summer, further cementing his status as one of the nation’s top QBs. Novosad committed to Baylor back in December and despite recent offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas A&M and others, the 6-foot-3 QB reiterated his commitment to the Bears on August 1.

2. DJ Lagway, Jr., Willis

A consensus top-five QB in the Class of 2024, Lagway is a hot commodity among Power 5 programs still searching for their signal-caller of the future. The dual-threat Lagway racked up 2,294 yards of total offense (1,579 passing, 715 rushing) and 23 total touchdowns (17 passing, six rushing) as a sophomore last season. The uncommitted five-star prospect holds offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Georgia and others. His athleticism, explosiveness and innate ability to create off schedule gives him arguably the highest ceiling of any QB on this list.

1. Jackson Arnold, Sr., Guyer

The consensus No. 1 QB in the state of Texas led Guyer to the Class 6A-Division II state championship game in his first season as a starter last year. Arnold’s 4,590 yards of total offense (3,931 passing, 659 rushing) and 46 total touchdowns (34 passing, 12 rushing) as a junior earned him Texas District 5-6A Co-MVP honors and solidified his spot among the nation’s top QBs. The 2022 Elite 11 MVP’s accuracy and athleticism makes him dangerous both in and outside of the pocket with the ability to make every throw from multiple platforms. Arnold remains committed to Oklahoma despite offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Cincinnati, Florida, Ohio State and others.
