Community School of Naples announces Eugene Chung as Director of Athletic Operations

NAPLES, Fla. — Community School of Naples has appointed Mr. Eugene Chung as Director of Athletic Operations, succeeding Col. Bart Weiss (Ret.) who has returned to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Mr. Chung joined CSN last year as Assistant Director, and remains as Offensive and Defensive Line Coach for CSN Seahawk football. Ms. Amber O’Malley, formerly the school’s Senior Associate Athletic Director, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Athletic Operations. She will also remain Middle School Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach.

As a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Athletic Operations works closely with the Head of School, Dr. David Watson, who said, “Since meeting Eugene, I have noted his outstanding administrative, communication and leadership skills. In the past year, he has also initiated several community outreach events with other Collier County schools. All this is in addition to his extensive experience in the world of college and professional sports. After a nationwide search, Eugene was the unanimous choice of all involved. This is excellent news for CSN.”

Upon hearing the news of his selection, Mr. Chung commented, “It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I am accepting the appointment as Director of Athletic Operations for CSN. I look forward to working with every student, coach and parent to form a community partnership of long-lasting memories and relationships through the athletic experience at CSN.”

Eugene was the 13th overall pick in the first round by the New England Patriots in 1992.  He enjoyed a nine-year career in the NFL as an offensive lineman, retiring in 2000 after playing his last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. From 2005-09, he had the opportunity to intern with the Jacksonville Jaguars pro-personnel department and the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff. In 2010, Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid brought Eugene on to his staff as an Offensive Line Coach. While there, Coach Chung helped to develop future Hall of Famers Jason Peters and Jason Kelce. In 2013, Andy Reid and Coach Chung went on to coach the Kansas City Chiefs, taking a 2-14 team to 11-5 after their first season, and earning multiple playoff appearances. In 2016, Coach Chung returned to the Philadelphia Eagles with Head Coach Doug Pederson to work with a struggling Eagles team. Coach Chung and the Eagles became World Champions in 2017, winning Super Bowl LII, beating the New England Patriots 41-33. This was the franchise’s first and only Super Bowl victory. In 2019, Mr. Chung decided to step away from the professional ranks of coaching.

Coach Chung is of Korean descent, and was the first Korean-American to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. He had attended Virginia Tech on a full scholarship where he earned four varsity letters and became a football All-American, earning his undergraduate degree in management. A four-year starter at both offensive guard and offensive tackle, he was inducted into the Virginia Tech sports Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2016 Eugene was inducted into the Northern Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He was born in Prince George County, Maryland, and attended Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia, earning All-District and All-Region honors as a two-way starter on both their offensive and defensive line, earning six varsity letters in both Football and Track & Field.

Community School of Naples, the largest PreK-12 independent school in Collier County, was established in 1982. CSN offers a rigorous college preparatory program, and 100 percent of its seniors attend select four-year colleges and universities. The school is located on a 77-acre campus in North Naples.
