Georgia’s next Jordan Davis? Bulldogs commit Jamaal Jarrett

GREENSBORO, N.C. (BVM) – Jordan Davis quickly found his way into the hearts of die-hard Georgia Bulldogs fans after arriving in Athens in 2018.

The defensive tackle from Charlotte, North Carolina recorded 25 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 11 games as a true freshman, earning SEC All-Freshman Team and Freshman All-American honors. Davis set a career high with 2.5 sacks the next season before helping lead Georgia to a win in the 2021 Peach Bowl. But the star interior lineman had his best campaign as a senior, totaling 32 tackles, two sacks and a rushing touchdown as the Bulldogs completed a perfect regular season before falling to Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship.

Georgia would go on to beat No. 2 Michigan in the 2021 Orange Bowl which led to a rematch with the Crimson Tide in the 2022 College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs beat their SEC rival to claim their first national championship since 1980. Davis would leave Athens as a national champion, a Chuck Bednarik Award (presented annually to the best defensive player in college football) and Outland Trophy (awarded to the best college football interior lineman) winner.

The Philadelphia Eagles used their first-round pick to select Davis No. 13 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. One of the best defensive players in UGA history signed a four-year, $17-million contract – all of which was guaranteed — with the Eagles after the draft, including a $9.55 million signing bonus.

As Bulldog fans get ready to defend a national title, they might soon see another Davis-like presence on their defensive line in the near future. Grimsley High School (N.C) senior Jamaal Jarrett is a four-star Georgia commit with more similarities to Davis than meets the eye.

First and foremost, Davis and Jarrett both played high school football in the state of North Carolina. In fact, Davis’ Mallard Creek High School is just an hour (83 miles) south of Grimsley where Jarrett is playing out his senior season. Jarrett is actually from Scottsdale, Ariz., but has lived in Greensboro since 2015 which leads to another similarity between these two gridiron stars.

Davis transferred from Hopewell High School to Mallard Creek after his sophomore year, meanwhile, Jarrett made a move from Smith High School to Grimsley ahead of his junior year, too. Not only that but Davis and Jarrett both share the same ability to be the biggest man in the room at all times.

One of the reasons Davis was so dominant at Georgia and became a fan favorite in Athens is his massive size. At 6-foot-6, 336 pounds, Davis sticks out like a sore thumb on a field full of large men. As crazy as it may sound, Jarrett is already just as big as, if not bigger than, Davis.

Jarrett is listed at 6-foot-6, 340 pounds as a high school senior and perhaps the wildest part of it all is that he just turned 17 years old in July. Jarrett’s size, power, athleticism and talent has made him one of the top football players in the state of North Carolina and one of the most sought-after prospects in the country.

The consensus four-star recruit picked up offers from Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina and others before committing to Georgia on his birthday in July. Jarrett racked up nine tackles for loss last season but his most valuable ability was constantly demanding doubles teams and collapsing the pocket with ease.

The plan is for Jarrett to be utilized in the same space-eating role in the middle of Georgia’s defense that was once supremely occupied by Davis. He still has his final high school season to wrap up this fall, but Georgia fans might catch a case of déjà vu when they finally see Jarrett suited up in Athens.
