Creekside girls soccer team looking to build off state championship season
ST. JOHNS, Fla. — With the opening of Creekside High School in 2008, a Girls’ Soccer Program was born. The team has had a lot of success over the years with some very talented players, some who have even gone on to play for college. Creekside Girls Soccer made it to the State Final match twice in history, winning their first State Championship this past year under the coaching of Joe Soto.
Last season’s team was led by co-captains Paige McSwigan and Brenna Robinson. Both girls were members of the Varsity team all four years of high school, and their experience was vital to the team’s success. According to Coach Soto, “Paige and Brenna knew the program inside and out, and knew what the team needed to improve on from the previous season. They are also extremely talented leaders, setting a positive example both on and off the field.” These leaders, along with the entire team, made history by bringing home the first State Championship in program history!
Togetherness is one word to describe this team of talented female athletes. Newcomers are welcomed because these girls recognize the importance of every member of the team to its success. As a home game ritual, the team gathers at one of the players’ houses for a pregame meal. How do they celebrate victory? Coach Soto said, “Together! It doesn’t matter how or where, they are a strong group and they celebrate the same way as they play, together.”
What started as a season of struggles, ended with a team that exceeded all expectations. With leadership from the coaching staff and captains, this team began to believe in themselves. They grew so much together throughout the season and were able to combine the talent and camaraderie to reach a goal no one thought possible. Once the athletes realized they were good enough, the sky was the limit!
What are the goals for the upcoming season? The team hopes to improve on last season and get back to the State Championships. Be on the lookout for their upcoming season schedule and get yourself out to see the Creekside Girls Soccer team in action.
