Get to know Pascack Valley QB, Hillsdale area resident Jake Crawbuck

HILLSDALE, N.J. — As Jake Crawbuck entered Pascack Valley High School, he never would have guessed that a mere 4 years later he would be the starting quarterback for the Panthers. After all, he wasn’t even on the team.

He recalls, “I was asked to join the team after the freshman school year had already begun and I was named a starter at defensive back immediately.” From there, in his sophomore year, he became the starting junior varsity quarterback, winning the position over more experienced players. During his junior year, he was named backup to the varsity quarterback and varsity safety. And now as his senior year begins, he has been named the starting varsity quarterback.

From the beginning of his high school career, Jake was drawn to the camaraderie and teamwork that football demands. He says, “What interests me the most about football is the commitment and the teamwork involved. There is no other sport like football because the amount of practice and dedication is immeasurable, and it includes mental and physical stamina from each player. Passion surrounds this sport and the game is intense.”

He adds, “I really try to get better every day, because I know that the team depends on me as much as I depend on them. Our team is always together through tough times, and we really have created a great bond and trust each other on and off the field. My team is my family and my teammates enable me to play great football.”

During Jake’s junior year, the Varsity team finished with a 6 and 3 record and won a playoff game against Montville 34-7.

Dedication—On and Off the Field

Jake had a number of great plays on the defensive side of the field for the varsity team last year. However, one play stands out the most. He says, “While the starting quarterback was injured, I threw a forty-yard pass to the number one receiver, which helped secure our victory against Demarest.”

Football also introduced Jake to the weight room and has increased his strength immensely over the past 4 years. This year he was able to make the 850-pound club, which means his squat, bench press, and hang clean max outs combined totaled above 850 pounds.

In terms of the intangibles, Jake says, “Leadership means always doing the right thing and trying to make the people around you better. Whether I’m on the field or off the field I want to set a good example. On the field, I’m always looking to put in as much effort as I can on every play. The younger kids look up to me and as seniors so we can’t be seen as slacking. We need to motivate and educate younger players. As a senior, it’s almost like I’m a coach as well as a player. I watch the younger kids in practice and teach them the things I have learned over the years. If you want people to look up to you, you must first look at yourself to ensure that you are a mentor and instill confidence in others.”

Jake’s Dad, Keith, says, “I’m utterly impressed with my son’s work ethic and dedication to this team. He has sacrificed many things over the last 4 years…too many to count. With his determination and leadership qualities, this team should prevail over the next eight games and into the playoffs. Good luck PV, we will be in the stands rooting for you!”

More Than Just an Athlete

While Jake gave up other sports to dedicate himself to football, he prides himself on his academic achievements and extracurricular activities as well. He has been in advanced math for the last 4 years. He describes mathematics as “one of my passions.” He is proud to say that he has a GPA of 3.7. His academic prowess earned him Star Student during his sophomore year. Finally, Jake is happy to say, “I have not missed more than 2 days of school in the last 3 years.”

Jake has also found time to be a part of the Deca Club, the Business Club, and the Environmental Club. He has also served as a Peer Leader for underclassmen.

Being a member of the football team has given Jake an opportunity to be involved in community service in a few different ways. The team has raised money via an annual car wash. He also participated in the Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. He says, “One of my favorite times of the year is when we work at the Pascack Valley Youth camp. We help younger kids develop football skills.”

Jake’s Mom, Michele, says “There are so many things I am proud I am of Jake for; but his scholastic dedication and commitment to do the best in school is as important as any. As in sports, Jake always strives to excel. His self-determination and drive have always served him well in both the classroom and on the field. Jake’s sense of purpose will serve him well in his future.”

Jake at Rest

When he is not focused on getting better as a football player, hitting the books, attending club meetings, or giving back, Jake values spending time with friends. He says, “I am fortunate that I have a very close group of friends. We spend a lot of time together playing different sports, traveling, and feasting at Chipotle.” He also enjoys traveling with my family and friends. He frequently travels the Caribbean islands as well as Southeast Florida.

So, to Jake and his teammates we say, “We are ready for some football!!!”
