UAB football looking to continue winning ways
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — UAB‘s football program has an interesting and much-publicized past. The 2014 shutdown of UAB’s football and other athletic programs at the university made national headlines. The people of Birmingham, along with many businesses, began a fundraising campaign to bring UAB football back to its feet for the 2017 football season. This comeback was an unprecedented move in college football history. Much of the success for this campaign was sealed in the promise of Protective Stadium.
UAB football’s return wasn’t just fanfare. The team saw success in their first season bringing home a winning record and in the second season, 2018, they won the Conference USA Championship. Another championship followed in 2020 and they have maintained a winning record since the program was reinstated.
Head coach Bill Clark had a lot to do with the success of the team, staying with them through the shut-down and holding a team together even when they didn’t have a program. But early in the summer of 2022 Coach Clark announced his sudden retirement due to health concerns. This year, the team that Coach Clark built is led by interim coach Bryan Vincent who was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Blazers.
