Poway HS fall sports back in action
POWAY, Calif. — Poway High School sports are back in full force this year—practices and games have been underway since August. This is the first year without COVID-19 testing and other previously required safety protocols. Students enjoy being back at it with their regular sports schedules.

Participating in sports gives students a healthy social-emotional outlet. Sports also help to unite the community by bringing people together during games and other sports-related functions.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, organized sports can have significant mental health benefits for kids. Participation in sports is associated with reduced stress and anxiety and increased self-confidence and self-esteem.

Return to normalcy
Athletic Director Damian Gonzalez, shares, “I am looking forward to getting back to a sense of normalcy with sports. I felt terrible for our student-athletes who, in the past, had shortened seasons or had limited access for their friends to watch them compete.”

This year, Poway High School welcomes two new fall-sport coaches: Sandra Reyes is the cheerleading coach, and James Cassidy—a golf pro at Maderas Golf Course—is the coach of the girls’ golf team.
All athletes can also look forward to a new weight room, which donations from the Poway High Foundation have partially funded. A previous water leak in the Titan Athletic Center forced the school to remove the former floor, and it became unusable. When completed later this year, the weight room, with brand-new equipment, will be available to all PE students and athletic teams to help with overall conditioning.
Above all, students are excited to be back on the fields, courts and trails. Gonzalez adds, “It’s great to see our fans filling the stadium this year; the school spirit has been tremendous. I look forward to that progressing the entire school year.”
