Beachin’ U11 Saugeen Shores Lady Sting are Provincial Grand Champions
PORT ELGIN, Ontario — As the final strike and third out was called in the Gold Medal Game of the U11 B Provincial Grand Championship Weekend, the Beachin’ U11 PWSA Saugeen Shores Lady Sting walked away as Provincial Grand Champions with an 11-8 victory over the Waterloo Ghosts, capping off a season that included an astonishing 26-10-1 record for the Lady Sting!
The 2022 ball season for the Sting was filled with many trials and even more tribulations. As a provincial tournament team, the majority of game play occurred in tournaments around the province. Their record included:
Bronze Medal – Brampton Blazers Tournament
4th Place Finish – Waterloo Ghosts Tournament
Bronze Medal – Saugeen Shores Battle at the Beach
Silver Medal – Oakville Summer Slam Tournament
The PWSA Provincial Grand Championships were held over the course of two weekends this fall in Stratford, where the Sting, lead by coaches Jeff Myatt, Michelle Wilcox, Matt Lamont, Marla Barfoot and Trish Preston, took to the field on their road to Provincial Glory.
After a 3 and 1 record after pool play, that included a 43-0 Win over Oakville, a 10-6 Win over Cambridge, and a 15-0 Win over Port Perry, the Sting went onto the Quarter-finals to battle Mississauga where the Sting road a combined no-hitter by Elliana Cameron and Peyton Myatt in a 15-0 victory. The Win moved them to the Semi-Final versus Chepstow where the team went on to win 5-0 to advance to the Grand Championship Final. Rain brought an end to the weekend, postponing the final to September 3rd.
The scorching heat of September 3rd provided a perfect setting for a Gold Medal Game as the Sting took on the Waterloo Ghosts for Provincial Glory. Led by outstanding pitching by Elliana Cameron, Marisa Barfoot and Peyton Myatt, the Sting held their opponents to just 2 hits over the course of seven innings. Offensively, the Sting saw Brooke Lamont lead the way with 2 hits and 4 RBIs, 2 hits out of Olivia Clark, Janey Harris, Avery Sachs and Myatt while Barfoot, Cameron and Lane Topham added one hit each.
The play of the game occurred in the 4th inning when Olivia Clark laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to score Marisa Barfoot from 3rd base helping to put the Sting in the lead that they would not give up for the balance of the game.
As the final pitch was thrown by Myatt, the game MVP, to strike out the final out of the game, leading the Sting to an 11-8 Win, a Provincial Grand Championship would provide the ladies of the U11 Sting with a Golden Finish to their season that they, along with their parents and siblings, will remember for forever!
