Q&A with Capistrano Valley HS cheer coach Cris Stuart
MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — We recently caught up with Capistrano Valley High School Cheer Advisor and Varsity Cheer Coach, Cris Stuart, to learn a little more about the program, the athletes, and his hopes for the upcoming season.
Please share some of the team’s history and your involvement with the program.
Cris Stuart: In the 90s, they were considered one of the best cheerleading teams in the nation. I’ve been a coach at Capo for a combined total of 24 years. I’ve been back for five years now, and we are continuing the winning traditions with the teams, getting better and better every year.
What goals do you have for the current season?
Stuart: Our primary goals are to have fun at Friday Night Lights games and to make the Finals at Nationals.
Who are the team’s captains or leaders? What makes them a vital part of the team’s success?
Stuart: Keeley Iserman, Emily Mock, and Abigail Wingen are our varsity team captains. Their leadership abilities really make them stand out. They lead by example and are true role models for all the girls on the team.
Does the team have any pre-game rituals or traditions?
Stuart: The team warms up together, eats dinner together, takes pictures in the end zone, and does the “Fight Song” with the band for pre-game.
How does the team welcome new members?
Stuart: The girls are incredibly friendly. We have three freshmen on varsity this year, and they were warmly welcomed by the entire team.
What has motivated the team to reach their goals this season?
Stuart: The girls know they can work together to achieve anything they put their minds to.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Stuart: The 2022-2023 varsity squad is the most disciplined team I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. I have high hopes for a successful and fun season.
