Mitchell Trubisky still makes Mentor proud at NFL level

MENTOR, Ohio (BVM) –After backing up Josh Allen for one season in Buffalo, Mitchell Trubisky has managed to hold off first-round pick Kenny Pickett for the starting job in Pittsburgh.

But before Trubisky became an NFL starter, he was a star at Mentor High School in Ohio.

He threw for 9,126 yards and 92 touchdowns as a Cardinal. And his rushing stats were nearly as impressive, racking up 1,559 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground.

Trubisky capped off his stellar prep career by taking home the Ohio Mr. Football Award as a senior.

He was a four-star recruit and the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country according to 247 Sports. In January, following his final high school football season, Trubisky committed to the University of North Carolina.

Trubisky redshirted his first season on campus, then stepped in as the backup to Marquise Williams the following year. He would serve in that capacity for two seasons, but managed to impress despite the small sample size.

In a 2015 game against Delaware, Trubisky came in to relieve and excelled. He threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns off the bench, leading the Tar Heels to a 41-14 win.

He became the full-time starter as a junior and blossomed throughout the year into an elite NFL prospect. He led North Carolina to the Sun Bowl that season, but they lost to Stanford 25-23.

In Trubisky’s only year as a starting college quarterback, he threw for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions.

When draft time came around, the Bears were enamored with the signal caller, trading up from the No. 3 pick to the No. 2 overall selection to make sure they got their guy.

Unfortunately for the Bears and Trubisky it did not work out in Chicago. But now at age 28, he has an opportunity with the Steelers to change all of the pre-written storylines about his NFL career.
