Swan Valley HS boys soccer team off to hot start
SAGINAW, Mich. — The Swan Valley Varsity Boys Soccer Team has had a great start this season! The Vikings are currently 7-2-2 out of an 18-game regular season schedule. They have a good chance of winning the East Division in the Tri-Valley Conference and making a run in the MHSAA Tournament.
The team captains are Connor Klein, Ethan Brooks, Nick Kumar, and Jackson Beery. These four boys have been on Varsity since their freshman year. We interviewed Captain Ethan Brooks and Connor Klein with some questions in mind. One of the questions was how the start of the season went. Ethan Brooks replied, “We are killing it so far and we are working really well together this season.” Ethan really looks forward to going to districts and hopefully pulling out a win!
Last season, Swan Valley lost some talented seniors but has had some dependable players fill their shoes. One player that has done an excellent job this season so far is Owen Bierlein. Owen took on the role of goalie and he’s been kicking it!
The team has struggled a little bit with injuries with both Nathan Coffel and Brian Booth out. Ethan said injuries are hard because of fewer numbers and subs in a sport that can be extremely tiring with high physical demands on the body.
Connor Klein, another senior and captain, was interviewed. Connor plays the position of forward for the Vikings. Coming into the season, Connor said they “struggled to figure things out at first but we soon got the hang of it.” At the start of the season, Connor stated “injuries have affected us because we’ve lost strength on the field.” Klein also expressed that this season he wants to see “how much we can improve by the end.”
One of the most important traits of any team is leadership. Connor was asked who he thinks fits this role the most. Proudly, he responded that the whole team does; they all play to their strengths and abilities on the soccer field.
Last season, the Swan Valley Varsity Boys Soccer Team fell just short in districts losing to Freeland in the finals 0-2. Be on the lookout for the district schedule when the Vikings will travel to district host Flint Powers Catholic the weeks of October 10th and 17th. Good luck Vikings!
