Lehigh Senior’s Richard Young leads as nation’s No. 1 RB

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. (BVM) – Class of 2023 football player Richard Young has been bringing an ample amount of attention to Lehigh Senior High School. Young is ranked by ESPN as the No. 1 running back in the country and he’s verbally committed to the University of Alabama.

Young is in his senior season for the Lehigh Lightning and, so far, it’s one for the history books because of him. On September 9, the team played in a nationally televised game on the ESPN Network. It was an extremely rare opportunity for the team and even Lee County as a whole.

“The bottom line is Richard is the one that made this possible,” Lehigh athletic director Greg Coleman told the Fort Myers News-Press

In front of the cameras, Young put up stats that didn’t disappoint. He had 283 rushing yards on 33 carries to help Lehigh beat Lake Gibson, 26-20. Young really showed off his speed under the Friday night lights when he went untouched as he bolted for a 90-yard touchdown – shown below.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Young has received offers from over 50 DI schools including Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and the reigning college football national champions – the Georgia Bulldogs. Recruiters really noticed the five-star RB’s dazzling junior season where he ran for 1,755 yards and scored 19 touchdowns on 196 carries in 10 games. He committed to the Crimson Tide shortly before the start of his senior season on July 29.

Last season, Lehigh football finished 8-3 overall. The team is 1-3 overall so far this season and looks to improve on that record. Working on getting the ball to Young, who is a dangerous ball carrier, will be key for the team’s success this season.

Young’s NIL valuation, according to ON3, is estimated at $218,000. His potential earnings will continue to grow as he lives up to the hype of being ranked No. 14 overall in the country in the 2023 ESPN 300.
