Get to know Kilworth area baseball family, the Proulx’s

KILWORTH, Ontario — For the Proulx family, baseball is not just a sport, it’s a way of life. All three of the children play competitive baseball, which is an all-year commitment. There aren’t many evenings and weekends that the family is not at a diamond.

Jack Proulx, 15, is a left fielder for the London Badgers, and Medway Cowboys. His love of the game is driven by his love of competition and working towards a goal. Jack’s determination has helped him overcome challenges. He puts in the hard work to play his best, and that training paid off this summer when the Badgers won the Premiere Baseball League of Ontario championships. In the final game, the score was tied 0-0 in the last inning. Jack came up to bat with two outs and cranked out a beautiful hit that drove the runner on second base home to win the game! Working on swinging at different pitches has been a focus of Jack’s, especially his biggest challenge; the curve ball. Keeping consistent at the plate is very important to his success. Jack states the best advice he ever received was, “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”, referring to his swing. Looking ahead, Jack has a dream to play college baseball.

Maggie Proulx, 14, played for the Delaware-Komoka-Mount Brydges Minor Baseball Association before advancing to competitive ball in 2019. She currently plays middle infield for the London Lightning Fastball U15 team. Like her brother, Maggie aspires to one day play baseball at the post secondary level. She also loves the competitive aspect of the game; applying strategy, power, and teamwork to achieve success. Baseball has taught Maggie how to work as part of a team and when to step up and be a leader. Having confidence is a crucial part of Maggie’s success; she keeps that up by not dwelling on mistakes and learning from them instead. Always move forward. Sometimes setbacks are out of our control. Maggie’s biggest challenge in the sport has been injury. She’s worked to overcome this challenge by taping, icing, and stretching well before she plays.

In this athletic family, baseball really is a family affair. Maggie’s twin Lucy, 14, also plays for the same team! Lucy opted to let her brother and sister take the lead in this article, but there is no doubt that she is also a fierce competitor.

During the spring/ summer season, the teams can play more than 50 games each, with practices on top of that. The off season is dedicated to training and conditioning. It’s a good thing the entire family is invested because baseball is a full-time commitment. Mom, Laura Proulx, gushes with pride when she describes her children. Not only are all three accomplished baseball players, but they are also good students and well-rounded teenagers. It’s safe to say she is their biggest fan.
