Burlington alum, gold medalist Emma Maltais piles up accolades with Ohio State

BURLINGTON, Ontario (BVM) The list of awards for Canadian double world champion and Olympic champion hockey player Emma Maltais seems to go on and on. The Burlington, Ontario native is one of the three Ohio State women’s hockey team players voted by the U.S. Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) coaches to the Preseason All-WCHA Team for the 2022-2023 course.

The 22-year-old forward returns to the Buckeyes roster after prioritizing Hockey Canada for the 2021-22 tournament and was voted to her third career preseason all-conference team (NCAA Division I). Maltais has won three gold medals in the last 12 months, including Women’s World Championship gold at the 2021 tournament in Calgary, last summer, and Olympic gold at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in February. In the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championships in Herning, Denmark, she tallied one goal and two assists for Canada.

The WCHA 2018 Rookie of the Year also received a vote for preseason conference player of the year. During her senior campaign in 2020-21, Maltais registered a team-high 11 assists and added five goals for 16 points. The former Burlington Eagles player was named a Second Team AHCA All-American and a Patty Kazmaier Top 10 Finalist for the second consecutive year. With 158 career points (55 goals, 103 assists), she currently ranks fourth among all-time Buckeyes, and she is just the second player in program history to collect 100+ assists, according to the Ohio State Athletics communications team.

Maltais’s team is ready to open the 2022-23 season on the road with a series at Minnesota State on September 30-October 1. The Buckeyes will host its home opener on October 7-8 against St. Cloud State at the OSU Ice Rink.
