Normal West HS girls volleyball defends Intercity Championship

NORMAL, Ill. — It’s always a fun day of friendly rivalry at the Intercity Volleyball Tournament. Many of the girls across all five local high schools (Bloomington High School, Normal Community, Normal West, University High, and Bloomington Central Catholic) have played with or against each other for years. Knowing each other, knowing each other’s style, level of play, tricks and strategies pose for a challenging day of friendly competition and an annual battle over bragging rights.

Normal West came into the tournament as everyone’s target as they are the defending Intercity Champions and finished third in the 3A State Tournament last season. However, U-High came into the tournament ranked number one as the Pioneers have kicked off a stellar season so far. U-high put up a fight in the first match of the day against the Wildcats, but Normal West was able to come out on top 25-22, 26-28, 25-20.

The Wildcats went on and finished the day 4-0 beating Bloomington, Normal Community, and Central Catholic as well securing the title of Intercity Champs for the second year in a row.

According to West coach Mueller, consistency was key. That coupled with a well-rounded offense and a strong defense, there is not any solo player carrying the team. Everyone played their role.

U-high went on to win their other three matches finishing the day 3-1 and taking second in the tournament. Normal Community went 2-2 on the day, and Central Catholic, a very young, much smaller program played well against the tougher competition, but finished the day 1-3.
