Salesianum HS head football coach Bill DiNardo earns 300th career victory
WILMINGTON, Del. — Salesianum School’s head football coach, William “Bill” DiNardo, achieved a milestone 300th career victory Saturday afternoon when Salesianum defeated St. Georges Technical High School16 to 14. DiNardo has led the program since 2004, earning an impressive 149 wins. During DiNardo’s tenure, Salesianum has made eleven state tournament appearances and earned four state championship titles in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2013.
Coach DiNardo began his coaching career in 1986 as head coach of Caravel Academy. In 1988, he began his tenure as Middletown High School’s head coach, where he amassed 149 wins and three consecutive state championship titles in 1997, 1998, and 1999 prior to his departure in 2003. Coach DiNardo reflected, “I have been incredibly blessed to be able to do something I love for thirty-seven years. This is a tribute to all the guys who have played for me and battled for me at Caravel, Middletown, and of course, Salesianum. Their heart, their dedication, their performances created this magic number.”
Delaware has had only one other coach to earn this distinguished honor. In 2016, long-time Wilmington Friends Coach, Bob Tattersall, did so with a 48-6 victory over Morrisville (PA). Salesianum’s Athletic Director, Katie Godfrey shares, “Salesianum School is honored that Coach DiNardo’s 300th victory can be celebrated and added to the storied tradition that is Salesianum Athletics. Coach’s passion for the game is evident in his successful leadership of the team over the past nineteen seasons. We know he is extremely proud of the win and his players, but more importantly, Coach is just getting ready for the next game.”
Salesianum’s football program began in 1921 and is in its 95th season pausing from 1939-1944 for World War II. The program continues a legacy of developing talented players who have continued their careers in college and beyond, including current NFL players Troy Reeder ’14 and Brian O’Neill ’14, both of whom played for Coach DiNardo.
