Top 10 Wisconsin Badgers running backs of all time

6. James White (2010-2013)

Most today know White from his time in the NFL where he won three Super Bowl championships as a fourth-round pick of the New England Patriots, and had an iconic game-winning overtime score to complete the Pats’ improbable comeback in Super Bowl LI over the Atlanta Falcons. However, before his NFL stardom, White was flashing his future potential time and again in Madison. Despite playing at the same time as dominant running backs in Wisconsin history like Montee Ball and Melvin Gordon, White more than held his own. As a freshman in 2010, he ran for over 1,000 yards on 156 carries, scoring 14 touchdowns and earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. White would find the end zone 19 more times over the next two seasons, racking up 1,801 total yards. It was White’s senior year in 2013 that was his best, as he and Melvin Gordon formed a dynamic backfield duo, with White rushing for 1,444 yards and 13 touchdowns. That season, he also became a receiving threat with 39 catches for 300 yards and two more scores. A two-time second-team All-Big Ten player, White finished his Wisconsin career with 4,015 rushing yards, the sixth-best mark in program history. He is also tied with his backfield mate Gordon with 45 touchdowns, Wisconsin’s fourth-best mark all time.
