Lo-Ellen cross country runner Owen Dobson speeds up as senior
SUDBURY, Ontario (BVM) — Owen Dobson is a cornerstone of the Lo-Ellen Park High School senior boys cross country team. He was a mainstay on the junior team and is ratifying that status in his first year as a senior in high school. Along with Sam Rice, Nolan Kuhlberg and Jacob Barney won the team gold medal (the whole crew ran the distance in 1:24:50) in the Rumble on the Rock event organized by Laurentian University at the end of September. Individually, he was sixth with a time of 21:16, the second-best among the LEP runners in the mixed 5600-meter run. Rice clocked 20:15 to take the win.
Dobson not only competes for the Lo-Ellen cross country running team, but he also practices Nordic skiing and track and field at LEP. He was named the first SDSSAA High School Athlete of the Week for 2022-23 and ranked third in the season’s first preliminary event at Kivi Park.
“Owen always displays the true characteristics of a Knight,” LEP athletics staff said in a release reproduced by the Sudbury Star. “As a senior athlete, Owen stands out as a leader. He encourages the younger runners, is always smiling and displays an extremely positive attitude. He loves sports and trains hard.”
The 16-year-old Grade 11 student has taken part in four runs this season with the LEP Knights and now has his sight in the Cross-Country Championship that will be hosted by the Durham District School Board on Nov. 5 in Oshawa, Ontario.
