Handsworth alum Hannah Rumble helps UBC field hockey start strong

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (BVM) One of the reasons the British Columbia Thunderbirds finished the first half of the 2022-2023 Canada West Women’s Field Hockey tournament with a winning record (2-1-1) is the effectiveness of Hannah Rumble guarding the net.

The third-year goalie collected a pair of shutouts and made it possible that the Thunderbirds had a perfect start. Thanks to that spotless opening, the goalkeeper and Arts student was named the Canada West Field Hockey Player of the Week 2 by the conference on Sept. 20.

The former West Vancouver Field Hockey Club player was unbeatable on the first weekend of the season as the Thunderbirds shut out the Calgary Dinos for a pair of wins.

Rumble’s undefeated streak ended in the doubleheader against the Victoria Vikes. The Thunderbirds tied 1-1 with their blue and gold opponent and then fell 1-4 at Cowichan Sportsplex. The Vikes have a perfect record (3-1-0) and are trying to win the Canada West title for the fourth time in a row and their 22nd in total.

Last season, the Thunderbirds tried to break the Vikes’ hegemony but ended up falling 1-0 in the conference final duel and had to settle for the silver medal. With Rumble’s contribution, the Thunderbirds closed last year’s tournament as the second-best defense in the West, conceding only six goals.

The Handsworth Secondary alumni, who wore the U16 BC White jersey, will try to turn her goal into a fortress so the Thunderbirds can celebrate their first regional (they have 25 so far) and national title (19) since 2017.
