Paul Chryst fired: Who are the Badgers’ top coaching candidates?
4. Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach
Campbell is a guy whose name comes up often when it comes to head-coaching openings at the college level and even the NFL level in the past. Another Big Ten team in Nebraska may have interest in the current Iowa State coach as well, but a jump to Wisconsin in 2023 would also make sense. A former player at Division III Mount Union, Campbell is another coach who got his start in the MAC, finding plenty of success at Toledo. Since joining Iowa State, Campbell has helped the Cyclones to finish above .500 in every season outside of his first in 2016, and has gone 2-3 in bowl games, highlighted by a Fiesta Bowl victory to cap off the 2020 season. After a 3-0 start that included a win over a Big Ten team – in-state foe Iowa – the Cyclones have lost two straight one-score games to Baylor and Kansas to fall to 3-2. Still, Campbell continues to run a consistent program, and his offensive style could be something that aligns with what Wisconsin wants to do.
