Swan Valley HS football team wins homecoming and 50th anniversary celebration game
SAGINAW, Mich. — With the leaves starting to change colors, the high school football season is well underway. The Swan Valley Vikings had their homecoming assembly, parade, and football game on Friday, September 30th. This was also the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Swan Valley School District. As a result, there was a lot of school spirit and pride from current students, alumni, staff, and the community that attended the festivities.
A special feature to kick off homecoming was the return of Lady Vikes Football. Traditionally known as Powderpuff football, the game faded from the Viking celebration during the mid-eighties. The Lady Vikes Football Teams participating consisted of all four high school grades showing amazing skill and athletic toughness in front of a huge Sunday night crowd. The Senior Lady Vikes prevailed over their freshman counterparts 6-0 in the championship game. The frosh was able to put together a last-minute comeback that ended just short on three consecutive Hail Mary passes.
The homecoming parade was amazing, as usual, with everyone participating. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the district, the theme was “Through the Decades” with each of the decades being represented, including the 2000s. There were a record number of parade entries on hand to celebrate the many years of Swan Valley Alumni. Each grade level made their own banner to represent either the different time periods. At halftime of the homecoming game, all of the banners were scored by a panel of judges. Coming in first place were the seniors, second – sophomores, third – juniors, and the freshmen – fourth place.
Later on in the night, the Swan Valley Varsity Football Team continued their winning streak by making it 4 in a row! It was a hard-fought game against the Birch Run Panthers. By the end of the game, the Vikings had prevailed over the Panthers 29-15.
To top the night off, Swan Valley Student Government and Swan Valley School District put on a firework show following the football game to celebrate the victory and 50 years! The field was also painted with the golden 50th-year emblem at center field and “Swan Valley” and “Vikings” in the end zones.
Swan Valley has been open since 1972 and is still going strong. As the District motto goes, “Once a Viking Always a Viking!”
