Jerry Jones’ net worth: Cowboys’ $8B value has far lead in NFL
DALLAS (BVM) – Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys for $150 million in 1989, and today, the franchise is worth $8 billion (5,233 percent return on his investment). According to the latest data from Forbes, the Cowboys reign as the most valuable NFL team. On a larger scale, the Cowboys still headline as the most valuable sports team in the world.
How much are the Dallas Cowboys worth?
Here are the valuations of the top two richest NFL teams from the past several years, according to Forbes.
2022: 1st: Dallas Cowboys, $8.0 billion – 2nd: New England Patriots, $6.4 billion
2021: 1st: Cowboys, $5.7 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $4.4 billion
2020: 1st: Cowboys, $5.5 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $4.1 billion
2019: 1st: Cowboys, $5 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $3.8 billion
2018: 1st: Cowboys, $4.8 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $3.7 billion
2017: 1st: Cowboys, $4.2 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $3.4 billion
2016: 1st: Cowboys: $4 billion – 2nd: Patriots, $3.2 billion
The monetary disparity between the Cowboys and the second richest team in the NFL grows larger each year. This year was the most significant gap ever with a staggering $1.6 billion separating the top two NFL teams.
This year marks the 14th consecutive year that the Cowboys have managed to be the No. 1 richest team in the NFL. The Cowboys are also in their sixth consecutive year as the richest sports team in the world (2016-2022). Since 2016, the franchise has packed on an additional $4 billion to its worth.
Jones has made the Dallas Cowboys the first franchise in history to be worth $8 billion, and with this rapid increase in trajectory, it looks like he’ll be the first to reach the next billion-dollar milestone.
In terms of revenue, the Cowboys are also the first team to generate over $1 billion in revenue. That’s of course in large part from AT&T Stadium and partnerships like the ten-year, $200 million deal with Molson Coors.
Jones turns 80 years old in October and this season marks his 33rd year as the CEO of the Cowboys. He has no plans on selling the Cowboys franchise anytime soon.
“I know that I wouldn’t sell the Cowboys for 10 (billion),” Jones told Yahoo! Finance in September “… I bought the Cowboys not to make money at all… what I had wanted to do was coach football… I think there is a future of values that will exceed what Denver went for (the Broncos sold earlier this year for $4.65 billion).”
One thing is for sure – money can’t buy success. The Cowboys may be the richest team in the NFL, but they are far from the most successful. Since winning Super Bowl XXX in 1996, the Cowboys have zero Super Bowl appearances/wins and even zero NFC championship appearances. But this all hasn’t impacted “America’s team” all that much because of the profitable marketing by Jones.
Jerry Jones’ net worth
The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, is worth $16 billion dollars according to the annual Forbes 400 2022 list that was released last week. His net worth has ballooned to a 75.8 percent increase from last year. Now, he sits comfortably as the No. 44 richest person in America.
Although Jones owns the most valuable sports team, he ranks No. 7 on the richest sports team owners list. That’s of course due to the performance of other business investments. Among many, Jones currently holds major investments in natural gas company Comstock Resources.
Notably, the Texas billionaire is ranked by Forbes with a philanthropy score of 1/5 which makes him amongst the least charitable. In addition, he has a self-made score of 8/10 which means he acquired most of his fortunes on his own.
After all, Jones did come from humble beginnings. Jones can recall working at his dad’s grocery store as early as 9 years old. Later in life, Jones went on a streak of business ventures in the restaurant space, but his attempts failed. He also worked for his dad who was the new chairman of Modern Security Life Insurance Co. and Jones was eventually named the executive vice president. The family struck gold when the company sold. In the 1970s, Jones began working in the oil and gas industry when he founded Jones Oil and Land Lease. He made millions – which gave him the capital to buy the Dallas Cowboys – and the rest is history.
