Q&A with Normal West HS football player, senior Brock Leenerman

NORMAL, Ill. — A Q&A with Normal West senior football player Brock Leenerman. Brock led the Wildcats in tackles last season. This year, he has added an offensive threat to his arsenal, scoring two touchdowns in a game from the running back position.

What is your favorite thing about being on the football field?

Brock Leenerman: Being able to play with my teammates who I’ve played with since freshman year.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Leenerman: Hanging with friends or working!

When you close your eyes and dream about your future, what does that look like?

Leenerman: Working as an automotive technician and being able to have my own place.

Ask someone in your family to pick one word to describe you. Who did you pick and what word did they use?

Leenerman: I asked my dad and he said “enthusiastic.” He said I show enjoyment for and with everything I do in life.”

As an athlete, what is a rule you live by?

Leenerman: Overcoming adversity and not letting the little things get to you and working for what you want!

What jersey number do you wear and why?

Leenerman: I wear No. 1 11. At first, it was a number that I just happened to get junior year. Going into my senior year, I decided I made a name for myself junior year with that number so I would keep it!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from football?

Leenerman: Take advantage of every moment and opportunity, because it feels like I was a freshman with three seasons left just yesterday it felt. Now, I’m a senior already in my final season.

How would you describe your personality?

Leenerman: I would say I’m outgoing, and I try to be there for my friends and teammates.

What is your favorite meal and who makes it?

Leenerman: The 10-piece boneless hickory barbecue wings combo with seasoned fries at Wing Stop.

What is your plan after high school?

Leenerman: I plan on going to trade school to be an auto technician. It’s something I’ve always been interested in.

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Leenerman: I’ve made plenty of mistakes and mess ups throughout out my football career. The key to overcoming mistakes always seems to be having short-term memory. Forgetting about it and then moving on to what you can fix or do the next play is what I try to do.

How can we find you on Instagram, SnapChat or Twitter?

Leenerman: @Brockleenerman for all three!

What is your pregame routine?

Leenerman: I always get a sandwich at Jimmy John’s before we have our team meeting. Then I go through our whole team schedule of getting ready. About 15 minutes before the game, I drink an energy drink. That gets me fired up and ready to play.

What is your favorite memory from high school, on or off the field?

Leenerman: Beating Normal Community High School this year and breaking our Chili Bowl losing streak to them. It was such an emotional and physical game, and we gave everything we had down to the last quarter. I can’t describe how it felt to show everyone what we are capable of.

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Leenerman: In JFL, I had a junior coach explain to us about being content with what you have meant and that has always stuck with me. I still can apply that to things today.
