Get to know New Bremen football player, senior Ben Sailer

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — We are very excited to present three-sport athlete, Ben Sailer. A senior at New Bremen High School, Ben has had many accomplishments throughout his career as an athlete.

Sailer plays football, basketball, and baseball for the New Bremen Cardinals, and has had much success.  He was on the state championship team 2020 and recipient of the honorable mention in both football and baseball.

He has been playing football since the 7th grade, and is an outside linebacker on defense and a tight end on offense. Ben has a strong passion for the game of football that is reflected in his performance.

“My favorite thing about playing football is having something to get me through school for the first couple months, winning, but most of all the brotherhood. Especially in New Bremen, where everyone gets along, this makes teammates that don’t normally hang out become close and learn how to come together and win together,” Ben tells us.

One of his favorite memories from his football career is going to the state championship in 2020.

“Winning state was a pretty great experience, getting to see the nice field and facilities. It made me feel like we were playing for the super bowl.”

When asked what the best piece of advice he’s ever received was, Ben tells us, “I saw a saying a long time ago that I have carried for a long time, ‘The reward is not so great without the struggle.’ This means all the work you put into being great pays off when you succeed and do it the right way, rather than winning and cheating or just not caring about the outcome.”

As Ben got older, he realized the responsibilities that come with being an upperclassmen on a varsity team.

“In previous years I would rely on the upperclassman to set the tone and bring the energy to practices. But now that they have graduated, me and the rest of the team have had to step up as the leaders, build a relationship with the younger guys and decide how we want practices and games to go.

This newfound sense of responsibility to the team allowed Salier to become a great leader for the Cardinals. Ben realizes that being a member of a team is a unique experience that can affect multiple aspects of life.

“Being a member of a team has taught me alot, like team work, confidence and alot more. But the biggest one I think is trust. If a team has the trust of one another then the teamwork and confidence starts building and growing stronger by themselves. The closer a game gets the more important the little things like trust and teamwork become,” Sailer tells us.

He encourages underclassmen who are just starting out in the sport to not worry about the past or the future, but rather focus on “what’s important now.” This focused mindset keeps athletes grounded both on and off the field.

When Ben isn’t playing football, he enjoys training for his other sports, playing golf, and hanging out with friends. As he continues to live out the rest of his senior year, Sailer hopes for the most successful season possible, and plans to work hard alongside his teammates and see where the season takes them.
