Maine South HS volleyball player Sofia Rossi named All-Tournament Team Player

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Sofia Rossi is a sophomore at Maine South, but has been a key player for the Varsity Volleyball squad since her freshman year. After her first experience with volleyball in the fifth grade, she fell in love with the sport. Rossi’s mom was a big influence and coached her middle school team. At the end of junior high, Rossi began playing club volleyball due to Covid canceling her school’s season. “Club really opened my eyes to what volleyball actually is like, and I grew to love the sport!” tells Rossi.

This 5’11 Outside Hitter for the Hawks leads the team in kills and was voted All-Tournament Team Player during the October 8 tournament at Glenbrook North High School where Maine South placed 4th out of 25 competitors. On a club level, Rossi was also included on the 2022 AVCA Phenom Watch List and the 2022 JVA Watch List.

“I love the energy that goes into volleyball games,” tells Rossi. “Once you step on the court, it’s all about the mindset you choose to have. Getting a kill or seeing someone else get a kill really boosts your spirit. I also love the sense of family that volleyball brings. I have such a special bond with my club and school teammates, which makes the whole experience even more fun. When I step on the court, I know it’s time to get things done.”

Maine South Varsity Girls Volleyball Coaches Kathleen Durkin and Sona Torosian put their all into helping Rossi and the team, providing support and helpful feedback. Rossi says, “Last year, making varsity as a freshman was a huge jump for me, but my coaches were always there for me. I would not be the player I am today without them.” She’s also influenced by volleyball star Logan Eggleston, #33 for the Texas Longhorns. “She’s an incredible player and watching her play is so fun. She’s also a great team player and is always there for her teammates. I think she’s a great example of what a volleyball player is like, and I look up to her a lot.”

It’s important to Rossi to have the attitude of a team player. “As a leader you need to be able to keep your composure and know when the time is right to say something. I like to show up for my teammates by cheering for them and looking out for them. I love seeing my teammates getting insane blocks, kills and digs. If you ever see me cheering for my teammates I will most likely be jumping up and down like crazy or slamming to the floor.”

After high school, Rossi hopes to play college volleyball at the D1 level. “It would be my dream to go big and play at University of Texas-Austin, Northwestern and Pepperdine. I also want to be successful in school, and hopefully someday be a real estate agent or sports broadcaster.”
