Rio Rico HS football team defeats rival for first time

RIO RICO, Ariz. — The Rio Rico High School, Nogales High School football rivalry dates back over 20 years.  Although Rio Rico has beaten the Nogales football team at the Junior Varsity level, up until this year, they had never beaten them at the Varsity level.

Although the Nogales Apaches had a significant size advantage on the line, both teams were athletically evenly matched.

Throughout the game, there were numerous changes of possession, with both team defenses dominating their side of the line of scrimmage.  Despite the incredible defensive stands by both teams, the Hawks were able to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was much like the first with both team’s offenses stalling, and the defenses dominating the field of play.

After a critical turnover by the Apaches, deep in their own territory, the Hawks were able to take advantage of the Apache miscue and turn it into a touchdown pass from Reef Robbins to Francisco Arellano in the right corner of the endzone, making the score 10-0 in favor of the Hawks.

The Apaches were not able to bounce back from the deficit and turned the ball over once again with little time on the clock to solidify the 10-0 Hawk victory.

Both teams played with intensity and hard work and represented their schools with pride.
