Get to know Utah State basketball player Isaac Johnson

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State basketball has been a fan favorite for many years because of the many memorable players. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with a new player Isaac Johnson, a transfer from the University of Oregon.

Isaac has lived in many places throughout his life, but basketball has been a constant since he was eight. He played travel ball in Vegas and California, but he really caught attention in eighth grade when he towered over everyone at the height of 6 foot 6 inches. Unsurprisingly, this was also the year he got his first dunk!

The athlete continued to grow each year until he hit 7 feet his senior year. That year also came with big decisions as he chose between schools and basketball programs. He eventually landed with the University of Oregon, but he was not ready to play for them quite yet. “It was important to me that I served a mission for my church, and the University of Oregon were so great to work with me as they learned about it,” explained Isaac. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Isaac wanted to serve a full-time, two-year mission, the first University of Oregon basketball player to serve in over fifty years.

After two years in Columbus, Ohio, Isaac returned for a freshman year in Oregon. “It was a great learning year for me, but I decided I wanted to transfer and started looking at Utah schools,” said Isaac. After visiting other universities, he knew that Utah State was the perfect fit. He loved all the staff, how they treated their players, and allowed basketball to be played within their team!

Now in his sophomore year of college, Isaac looks forward to his first year with Aggie basketball. He has enjoyed all the relationships the sport has created and is excited for that to continue. “I love the camaraderie of basketball,” he expressed, “Because I have been able to play against players from all over the world and country, almost any team I play against in college, I know somebody!”

Isaac also appreciates that basketball gives him many different opportunities, such as the new laws surrounding name, image, and likeness (NIL). Because athletes are allowed to partner with companies for promotions and monetize the partnership, Isaac has been able to connect with local companies.

This year will be a great season of Aggie basketball, and keep an eye out for our 7-foot friend, Isaac Johnson.
