Meet new North Branch HS JV softball head coach Pat Sharrard

LAPEER, Mich. — Pat Sharrard is North Branch High School’s newly appointed Junior Varsity Softball Head Coach. Coach Sharrard has been coaching for 27 years at a variety of levels. The love of the sport came after watching his daughter for 20+ and participating in her lessons. He learned from the best, including Doug Gillis, a professional fast-pitch softball pitcher.

When asked what are one or two things that will be the key to the team’s success, Coach said, “To be successful this season, the number one items will need to be team bonding, communication, and learning to rely on each other to form one solid unit.”

One of the most memorable games over the years was when the 2019 North Branch Varsity squad made it to MHSSA state semi-finals for the first time in school history.

“The game was neck and neck, and we ended up losing 2-1 to Escanaba.” Sharrard said.

Coach was asked how does he encourage the team after a disappointing loss? The answer?

“Pointing out what lessons we can learn from the loss, opportunities to get better, and what we need to do in practice to achieve this.”

Sharrard has learned some lessons over the years and understands everyone is different.

“As a coach, you have to be flexible and access how each player learns best and designate practice time for each player.”

We are looking forward to hearing about the success of Coach Sharrard and the North Branch JV Softball team. Coach hopes to leave a legacy of his love for the game.
