5 times football teams lost because of celebration penalties
1. Dwayne Rudd, Cleveland Browns, 2001
Perhaps the single greatest football celebration mistake in history, Rudd’s helmet toss has not yet been forgotten. With his Cleveland Browns winning 39-37 over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the 2002 NFL season with four seconds left in the game, Rudd wrapped up Chiefs’ quarterback Trent Green for what he thought was the game-clinching sack, launching his helmet off in celebration. Unbeknownst to Rudd, Green had gotten the ball away and it was recovered by one of his offensive lineman who carried the ball downfield to the 30-yard line.
Since the play was still active and games can’t end on a defensive penalty, the Chiefs were given 15 additional yards and an untimed down which allowed them to attempt a 30-yard game-winning field goal. The kick was true and the Browns lost in what is one of the wildest endings in NFL history.
On this date in 2002, Chiefs tackle John Tait's 28-yard run, the 2nd-longest ever by an offensive lineman, helped lead to the game-winning field goal.
