Get to know Robert Bateman SS football player Logan Thiessen

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia — Logan Thiessen at 17 years old, aspires to play professional football. It’s something he’s wanted to do ever since he was a young boy. For many years he heard he should be realistic, until one day he heard encouraging words: “Someone has to do it, someone has to be the guy to play professional football one day.” These are the words of hope that Logan leans on whenever the risk of being realistic appears.

Logan is in his 10th year of playing football. He’s in grade 12 at Robert Bateman Secondary School where he plays for the Bateman Timberwolves. He’s found that he needs time to himself before the game. He takes around 15-30 minutes to get into his game mood. He’s got a ritual for every game. When it comes time to play he puts on his left cleat, then his right. Once that happens, in that order he knows it’s game time.

Logan has learned a lot about leadership by being part of the team. He’s one of the football team captains, so others look to him for guidance. It’s Logan’s responsibility to help teammates focus during practice. When they struggle, he leads them.

Advice that stands out to Logan came from Coach Mills. “Get 1% better every day,” Mills said. “Eventually, that 1% is going to become something great.”

It’s rare in sports you get a redo. Logan remembers a great loss during a championship game. He was the kicker for the Abbotsford Falcons during the game, all he needed to do was kick the extra point to tie the game. He missed. They lost. He felt gutted. He felt more defeated than ever. The next day he practiced kicks for two hours. Then two years later, the same teams came face to face in another championship game. Logan made both his kicks, and they won the game with ease! Logan learned a valuable lesson about overcoming challenges.
