Lovejoy girls XC team wins Class 5A State Championship
LUCAS, Texas — For the second consecutive season, the Lovejoy High School girls’ cross country team won the state cross country team championship. The team posted an outstanding score of 28, blowing away their closest competitor, Boerne Champion, who finished with a score of 85.
The depth of talent on the team, as well as their ability to stay consistent, has been a key factor in their success. Senior Amy Morefield once again led the team, placing 5th overall and 3rd among the scoring runners. Coming in right behind her for five out of the next six places were junior Sara Morefield, freshman Camryn Benson, junior Peyton Benson, and junior Kailey Littlefield.
While they set a record by winning back-to-back state championships, they also made history with their outstanding performances by being the first 5A team in the Southern Region to qualify for the Nike National Championship in Portland, Oregon. The team raced against the best in the nation and finished as the 14th-fastest team in the United States.
Coach Carly Littlefield was rewarded for all of her hard work and dedication to the girls’ cross country team when she was named by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) Coach of the Year for 5A-6A Cross Country!
