Dothan HS boys basketball team begins new season

DOTHAN, Ala. — The Dothan High Wolves Boys Basketball team is has been ready for the new season for a while now. The team opened on play on November 10th against Smiths Station. They will play 23 games and participate in the Dothan Hoops Classic Tournament right after Christmas.

Two of the players expected to contribute to the success of the team include sophomore, Bryson Berry, and junior, Mehkai Menefee. Both were born and raised in Dothan and both played basketball from an early age. They want to play basketball on the next level if possible. Berry is very interested in pursuing basketball at Florida State University. Menefee said, “I am not set on any one team, but I do like Alabama.”

Berry stands at 6’0 and plays point guard. He believes that his strength on the court is ball handling and dribbling. Menefee is 6’2 and is a shooting guard. He sees his greatest strengths as shooting and his vision on the court. Both are excited about the upcoming season and new coach, Jeremy Bynum. Menefee said, “He is the best coach I have ever had in my life. He pushes us hard.” “He is tough and he pushes us past our limits. He has high expectations for us…even higher than we have for ourself. He always tells us that what we do outside of the court will affect us on the court,” according to Berry.

I asked both players their favorite basketball memory so far. Berry said, “It was my whole 8th grade year. I grew up with everyone that I played with that year and it was just fun. Coach Merritt (Chase Merritt, Dothan Preparatory Academy) really impacted me and he made the game so much fun,” Menefee said, “In my 9th grade year at Carver 9 we went undefeated. Our last game was against Enterprise and it was a struggle but we pulled through. Just having that feeling of going undefeated was great.”

Both players feel like the Dothan Wolves have a chance of having a really good season. Menefee said, “I can’t wait to get the new season started. I am very excited and looking forward to it!” Good luck Coach Bynum and the Dothan Wolves!
