LINWOOD, N.J. — While a few of the Mainland fall sports teams are still competing (we are looking at you Cross Country and Football), we are happy to share some highlights from a season that began in the heat of August and concluded just in time for the cold.
Signing Day for Mainland Girls Crew: Ahead of the spring season, five Mainland seniors committed to rowing at the collegiate level next year. They include (above, left to right): Colbee Obermeyer – LaSalle University; Gigi Molosso – University of Rhode Island; Paige Whitley – Clemson University; Jillian Lynch – Michigan State University; and Madison Naman – University of North Carolina. Congrats, ladies!
Mainland Girls Volleyball: The 2022 Mustang Volleyball team finished the season with an 18-5 overall record. In the CAL Conference, Mainland ended 14-2. The Mustangs were led by captains Caroline Moyer (SR), Ava Jamison (SR), and Bella DeRichie (JR). With a new head coach, the Mustangs battled their way through the season and made it to the Group III Sectional Finals where they fell short to Pineland Regional. Sadie Kent led the team with 215 assists, 111 service points, and 33 aces. Bella DeRichie also had notable stats this season with 99 kills, 47 digs, and 30 aces. The team should be very proud of their accomplishments this season. -Erica Reis, Mainland Volleyball Head Coach
Mainland Surf: The Mustang Surf Team had a great year! Led by Captains Joey Costello, Aydan Faust, and Nathan Fontana, the team competed in four dual meets, one tri-meet, and the NJ State Championships. We traveled to Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island, and Atlantic City to surf nice waves. The team had some outstanding individual performances and is already looking forward to next season. -Richard Sless, Mainland Surf Coach
Mainland Girls Cross Country: The Mainland Girls Cross Country team finished the season 8-1. It won the Atlantic County Championships and finished 3rd in South Jersey Group 3. The team also competed at the NJ State Group Championships, where Gillian Lovett finished 5th overall, with Sofia Day coming in 7th. Each of them qualified for the Meet of Champions, the first time two Mainland girls have qualified for that race.
Mainland Boys Cross Country: The 2022 team finished with a record of 8-1, good for second in the Cape Atlantic League American Conference. They were the runner-up team in the Atlantic County Championships and 3rd in the CAL Meet. Senior Elliot Post had an excellent season and qualified for the State Group III Meet. -Daniel Heyman, Boys Cross Country Coach
Mainland Field Hockey: The field hockey team competed against several top teams across the CAL. Some of our stand-out moments this season included competing against Delsea in overtime and beating Oakcrest in an exciting 4-3 overtime win. Some senior highlights: senior goalie Farley O’Brien recorded her 200th and 300th career saves; senior forward Grace Bean recorded a hat trick of assists in a game against Absegami; senior midfielder Emily Smith scored two out of our three goals in a win against Lower Cape May; senior defender Kat Melhorn, who unfortunately was out all season with an injury, played an integral part in our team mentality and camaraderie. We look forward to continuing to build on our success in the upcoming seasons! – Erin O’Connell, Field Hockey Head Coach
Mainland Boys Soccer: The Mainland Boys team finished the year with a record of 6-12-1. After a rough start to the season, the boys fought hard to right the ship and qualify for the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs. The season concluded in a hard-fought game against Clearview on the road. This year had a couple of bright spots as the team managed to win three games in sudden victory fashion against previously unbeaten Oakcrest, a tough Pleasantville team, and Absegami. Goals from Alex Wise, Ethan Rovins, and Bryan Perez respectively, lifted the Stangs to big wins. Additionally, the team’s captains Ethan, Alex, Matthew Karpinski, Javier Torres, and Nathan Waters all lead with poise and commitment all season. – Alex Weidman, Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach
Mainland Girls Soccer: The 2022 Mainland Girls’ Soccer team finished with a record of 11-4-2, 9-1-1 in the Cape Atlantic American Division. We were runner-up in the Cape Atlantic Conference Championship losing to undefeated Ocean City 2-1 in overtime. We lost in the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs in the quarterfinal round in penalty kicks to Cherry Hill West, the eventual SJ Group 3 champions. Our girls were led by our five seniors—Emma Karver, Campbell Reese, Jane Meade, Hannah Cipkins, and Madison Naman— who helped create a positive team experience for all our players. -Chris Meade, Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach
