Mainland Regional HS girls tennis players Marlee Campbell and Elizabeth Ong win CAL tournament
LINWOOD, N.J. — The Mainland Girls Tennis team finished with another undefeated season to win the Cape Atlantic League (CAL). They also saw their first doubles pair of Marlee Campbell (sophomore) and Elizabeth Ong (junior) win the CAL tournament by defeating Vineland 6-1, 6-0 in the finals. According to coach Yohe, the pair had a breakout season in a way that hasn’t been seen in quite some time.
“We always seem to have very strong doubles pairs, and they often anchor the team,” Yohe explains. “Elizabeth and Marlee had a tremendous season, going undefeated and even making it to the semifinals of the South Jersey Interscholastic Championship, something that hasn’t been done since Haley Krachman and Rachel Rha did it ten years ago.”
This was the first season Ong and Campbell played as a doubles pair, surprising spectators who assumed the two had a shared history, given their compatible play.
“I think we make a good pair because we are friends outside of just tennis,” Campbell explains. “We know how to have fun and also keep each other calm, which helps us perform our best.”
Ong agrees, adding, “When you tense up too much, your playing begins to suffer. Since we are good friends who joke around frequently, we keep the game fun, allowing us to play at our best.”
Friendship, teamwork, and talent— a proven equation for success. Congrats to the Mainland’s first varsity doubles pair, as well as the entire team!
