Q&A with Hanover HS cheerleading competitor Keatyn Whittaker

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. — As an accomplished athlete at Hanover High School, Keatyn Whittaker will be traveling to Hawaii as a member of the All-American Cheer Team to compete against other cheerleaders from all over the country.  There is no doubt that you will have a bright future ahead of you, Keatyn!

What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?

Keatyn Whittaker: Some of my personal goals are to Place at VHSL State Cheer Competition and win Summit with my Fame Allstars cheer team.

What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

Whittaker: My biggest challenge is my confidence and being able to go on the floor and trust myself. I just tell myself that I can do it and to just have fun.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Whittaker: The best advice I was ever given is “Always be better than you were yesterday”.

What do you love about your sport?

Whittaker: I love the friendships it’s brought me and the joy you feel after performing.

Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?

Whittaker: I always drink a Starbucks coffee and listen to the same music playlist.

What do you like to do outside of your sport?

Whittaker: I like to hang out with my friends, online shop and go to concerts.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Whittaker: It’s taught me how to communicate with people better and always work hard and push myself to be the best I can be!

What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?

Whittaker: Always believe and trust yourself!

Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.

Whittaker: I once forgot my routine while performing on stage. After that, I made sure to mentally run through the routine before competing.

Has your team won any awards or reached any accomplishments that you would like to highlight?

Whittaker: My team is a 4-time District Champion, Regional Champion & 2nd place winner in the State Championship Competition 2022 -Hanover High School. My All-Star team has won many competitions over the years and placed 3rd in the National Summit Cheer Competition.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Whittaker: I am Captain of both my high school sideline and competition cheer teams at Hanover High. I was also named 1st team All-Region team & 1st team All-State team. I also made the All- American cheer team and I will be traveling to Hawaii to participate in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in early December with the rest of the All-American cheer team Fame Allstars.  My personal awards are Best Technical Base & Most Inspirational Cheerleader for my team.
